ive smoked marijuana since i was young.. 13yrs old was my first experiment with marijuana. ive smoked pretty much daily minus a couple years i quit in between then and now..

apparently (after more than 10 yrs smoking) my dad finally figured out i smoke buds everyday. he said, "you criticize your mother for drinking when you're smoking dope all day long" i wanted to laugh hysterically but refrained and just let him give him his rant about marijuana.

although he did ask me "why" i do and i simply asked him "why not?" lol

I just think its sad that so many people are really misinformed about marijuana but think being an alcoholic is much more respectable.

anyone else encounter these types of problems with their family? whats surprising is my parents aren't "old" parents. we only have 22 and 25 years between us (respectively).

anyone else encounter a family who doesnt smoke and feels the need to constantly rag on your choice of using marijuana?

pothead > alcoholic. My ex alcoholic mother fully supports smoking herbs but after a 20 year spiral has learned that alcoholism is deadly.

Your "why not" reply wasn't very honest. I told my folks hey, I am irritable, bipolar, suffer from anxiety and get antsy. It levels me out and calms me down. I might become hungry, happy, and sleepy.. but.. at least I don't feel irritable or overly anxious at random times. I didn't smoke for a few years, and I was more irritable and a huge asshole. Just didn't like how "sober" made me feel.

One of my brother's in law is like that. I remember one year at Christmas when he offered me a drink, and I declined. His reply was, "Well you'll smoke pot huh?" He's still very anti-pot, but has no problem with putting down bottles of whiskey.

I've had coworkers that frowned upon my smoking while they drank a 12 pack plus whiskey when traveling. No, we didn't share rooms.
I never missed time from being too hungover from my moderate MJ use to help me sleep in a strange place like the fishes did.

my mother just rolls her eyes in a smirky way if i bring it up. i don't smoke in front of her in my own house, not because she'd make a stink about it, but because i know she would prefer i didn't and it's not a big deal. however, i do smoke in front of her if it's at a friend's house or something and a joint goes around. that's right. me and my friends (late 20s-early 30s) have gatherings and sometimes invite and hang out with out our moms. wanna fight about it?

No one but my friends know I even smoke.

Diddo. Hell if my family new of half the "sinful" shit I've done in my life (I use the word sinful because that is the framework they'd judge me within..I don't support this system personally), they'd probably try to ship me off to Jesus Camp or something. Of course my Southern Baptist sister (who doesn't believe in drinking) hides booze bottles in locked brief cases in her closet so that she can drink after her husband goes to bed. Amazing that behavior is condoned more than a harmless bowl. But in general, I'm considered the heathan of the family. It's a title I try to live up to everyday! :bigjoint:

I never fucking understood this. This whole double edged sword is so faulty

people see someone drinking their drug and it's aaaaaaaaaallll fine and dandy. They're just socializing, right?

people see someone smoking a drug and it's like "DRUGS!" "DOPE SMOKERS!" "degenerates!" "drug smokers!" "There's drug smoke everywhere!" "THESE GUYS ARE TAKING DRUGS!"

You get completely sloshed shit faced incoherent drunk, and the next morning it's like "Oh don't worry about him, he's living the life like every young person should!

This topic is like arguing with a woman.

Its cultural.

In many American circles, alcohol is the only acceptable intoxicant.

It doesn't really matter that alcohol abuse is more physiologically damaging than cannabis, its "alcohol OK, cannabis bad."

Its not a coincidence that alcohol is legal and cannabis illegal, in a democracy the laws are (mostly) a reflection of popular opinion.

Fortunately, American popular attitude towards cannabis is changing slowly. The trend is such that inside of 20 years recreational cannabis use and limited cultivation will probably be legal or decriminalized in a substantial part of the country.

Actually it was a 60 year old family friend insisting I be passed the joint in front of my Ma that helped her come around. I think it's cool if you're secure enough in yourself that you can chill with your friends and their ma's too! And thei ma's must be cool to hang out with you guys :3

When my ma goes out drinking, I chaperone her. I smoke all night but will usually not touch a drink. Special occasions like that are when I can smoke in front of my mother. He also has an alcoholic boyfriend, ex alcoholic father, alcoholic pedo father in law an the daughter of one of her friends was caught selling smack... So seeing me next to them she threw in the towel. I joke about weed from time to time and she gently informs me if my clothes (or phone!) smells of weed but I cannot just spark up any time or llet my manners, chores or grades slack. Extra effort if she is going to be cool with me smokin at all, which is fair.

But I think there is a pattern here.. A revelation. Several threads where people are confessing the evils of alcoholism lately, mentioned in church today and a few apologies came my way after drunken ramblings. I still dot get the double standard with getting drink and getting high. Not even like a light social drink, but the norm in the UK at least is for people to go totally overboard and get FUCKED UP them puke everywhere... And it's acceptable!

Say no to the booze, kids!

Your answer wouldn't be honest for me. I'd say i just wanted to be high.
