they do all the crap the police have no time to do anymore
the regular police have cs gas (mace) and taser
the cops with machine guns were called so19/co19
not sure what they call them now

You are lucky if they are still only using CS in your area, police over here have upgraded to PAVA spray(many times more potent/stronger than CS) Also the CS spray used by the UK police is over 25 times stronger than the mace used by US police apparently so you can imagine how nasty the PAVA is lol

Also with the armed police militias(in pics) they fall under different catergories nowadays, Command operations (CO) Special operations group (SO) Territorial support group (TSG) etc etc, all do very different jobs and sometimes you will have multiple categories with overlapping areas (i.e. places like london will have local, borough and regional units all covering same area as well as other units like royal protection squad, diplomatic protection group etc etc)
Some only do drugs busts, others firearms offences/arrests, others deal with political and religious groups/protestors etc etc

I think that might be because cs gas itself has more effect on innocent bystanders ?

the cs gas you could/can openly buy in France etc does not need to make full contact to have a pretty serious effect
these other sprays cause the eyes to close like pepper spray
cs gas does not force the eyes shut
cs gas is much more effective in a crowd situation as it has an incapacitating effect on breathing too
cops used it in the past like tear gas , i remember they got into some bother because they squirted it on buses/confined spaces
which resulted in innocent folk getting taken to hospital for respiratory problems

The pen. In Ala. it's a racket. They descend on a college area, sporting event, concert,etc and write 100,s of petty tickets (mostly parking). Protecting and serving I guess.
