Isn't the "public" fire department paid for with private money or is there some kind of other magic payment that happens Johnny Blaze?
No, I do not pay my local fire dept. directly. I pay the county in the form of taxes, which that money goes into a " public " fund who then pays them what they need. Once I GIVE my money to the state, it is public funds, not private funds that pay for services.

Which would you say is more common, communities with volunteer or no fire dept or communities with full time public servant fire departments.

For the communities that operate without public funding, they survive by fund raising, donations and yes, "fire insurance" fees.

You are not wrong at all in your case, but it's not the same for everyone else.

It depends on how rural you live I guess. Also probably has to do with the way counties vote in bonds and levees. 900 a year seems a little ridiculous to me, especially when you factor in how many people live in the community, say a 1000, maybe less, maybe more in some cases. 1000 homes insurance fees equals 900000 a year. That doesn't even guarantee your home would be saved. It seems like a lot for a Volunteer fire dept costs a year. Add in fundraising and donations, quite the racket they have. Not to mention, in most cases fire dept. are the first responders, and in my area run their own ambulance, imagine a 2-3 thousand dollar ambulance ride bill on top of you insurance fee, wowzers. I would rather collectively everyone pay and know they are gonna come no matter what, and also have enough resources to save two homes on opposite ends of town at the same time, but that's just me and libtard thinking right???

The fee was 75 a year, not a month. Is that a ridiculous price to protect a 300K home? A price he paid for years until he decided he didn't want to anymore despite calls reminding him and 2 letters saying the same. He admitted he screwed up, why can't you?

What you and I would rather matters not to a community neither of us live in. Or at least if we minded our own business it wouldn't.

I'm not calling you names, I'm discussing things on a forum.

What if he couldn't pay? What if someone else in the community couldn't pay for financial burden, their home burns to the ground? It is ridiculous to pay a insurance fee for a public utility, especially if they already pay property taxes. I'm sure it hurts to see your belongings burn to the ground especially the irreplaceable things, but I'm sure he's not out a home and gonna be living on the streets, his home owners insurance will cover the costs, and you know what in most cases will cover the bill the FD sends you after they come out. Would he have gotten another bill even if he had paid? If so then yeah definitely he should have said fuk you to their fee, and sued the FD for extortion after they let his house burn to the ground. remember they are volunteer, it should cost nothing for a crew to be there 24/7 on call, they are volunteering their time.

A lot of what ifs that are completely irrelevant to what happened to this guy. He has come out and said he made a choice and screwed up.

What if someone couldn't pay and explained it to the FD and they assisted?

What if that 75 dollar fee covered all costs?

What ifs are not very productive. We can what if each other into Bolivia (tm Mike Tyson)

So what, "he" thinks "he" screwed up, his house just burnt to the ground of course he does right now, ask him after he talks to his real insurance company and they suggest getting the lawyers involved. I bet @Red1966 really thought " he" screwed up not putting smoke detectors in his house right after it burned to the ground, but look at him now, look at all the excuses he comes up with now to not take responsibility for not having them. Everyone else who fails to pay screwed up also? No the system he is forced to adhere to is screwed up.

What is the most messed up is the actually SAT THERE AND WATCHED IT BURN!

What human being sits and watches a person's house and belongings burn up and not help?
Regardless of the fire department or not, what sorry ass human being watches a house burn down sitting on 1000s of gallons of water and a spray hose over 75 freaking dollars?

There was a case a while back were the FD stood on shore and watched someone in the water drowning. They weren't allowed to assist due to protocol and policy. It happens more often than one could imagine. It all falls on the lawsuits that get filed over such events.

Cash rules everything around you. Dollar dollar bills, yo.

If the racist ass conservatives of the site had their way, the FD would be able to sit there and watch it burn based on the skin color of the home owner, think about that.

ya know, i bet robroy and ginwilly would argue for that.

freedom of choice and all.

hell, it might even violate their religious beliefs. ginwilly is all for letting paramedics watch people die if the victim is gay.

So fire engines maintain themselves?

Run on "water power"?

Uniforms are obviously free too.

Fire station gets free electricity.

Lol.

You people really don't think before you talk.

If U try to get by on the too cheap, here's what U get. My county is a rural bedroom community for a large Metro. area. A few decades ago the plan was to have the larger incorporated areas have pro. fire depts. the small towns shared pro. depts and the unincorporated areas used a volunteer system with descent bldgs. and hand me down equip., from the muni. depts.. It was a national joke. The national press picked up on the buffoonery and reported it regularly, called worst fire dept in US. Some response times reported as 1hr. 20 mins.. The home insurance rates were the highest in the nation, some insurers would not write new policies in parts of the county. Coverage was a major factor in buying or selling a house. The Three Stooges moment came when a house NEXT DOOR to one of the vol. depts. caught fire and burnt to the ground b4 the dept. could get organized to battle it...AKA. U get what U pay 4..
