Excellent analogy. Completely off topic, but I grocery shop literally an hour from my home for that very reason.

It was a little a convoluted, but the point was you exercise a choice of which grocery store you use and it makes sense to you to chose the one which gives you what you perceive as the best value. it makes no sense to be forced to pay for one you don't like and don't use.

People are normalized to the idea that somehow "services" which government provides, like security, education, etc, couldn't be improved if real competition were allowed.

Some things which occur on a frequent and regular basis are "normal", but that doesn't mean they are just or the most effective.
