Dude vos just told you 20-30% percent so for five gallon buckets use enough to fill the bucket about 1/3 then fill the bucket with soil and mix it. Also what sort of soil you using that has none. Any decent soil has perlite in it already.

I like the perlite with the big chunks in it.they make different sizes fyi.also,if you use too much,it will work it's way to the top.

I would also lighten that up a bit with a soil conditioner if you're using straight compost.I like happy frog for a soil conditioner.peat, humus, worm castings, bat guano all in one.so 1/3 compost,1/3 happy frog,1/3 perlite.
good luck bro

Yah some folks like the chunky stuff I prefer the smaller stuff. Simply for the fact I feel it most evenly aerates the soil.
I like to think the bigger stuff breaks the soil up a bit more and doesn't seem to work it's way up to the top(so I can add less).but that also may have happened because I added too much that particular grow.

It does. The chunky stuff has less surface area than the smaller and just doesn't work as well.

It's also fairly recent, I guess to go with the "chunky" trend of everything. Does LOOK like it would work better, till you do an actual side by side.

*I* run ~40% in my mixes, making them from scratch for over 40 years.

20-30% of the intended pot is good

the more the better imo

good luck
I agree with this. I was told 50/50 at first. So thats what i did and at the end of the cycle i found that i was throwing away perlite because a lot had settled to the top and it was almost like a full layer of snow floating on the top of every water/feed. When i cropped i checked out of curiousity and there was still plenty throughout the medium, so i felt as if i had wasted A good 20/30% of the perlite i put in.
