As for my statistics...i didn't make any claim to being a statistician. I'm merely repeating the numbers I read...from several different sources, none of which were Wikipedia and all of which were actually books written by experts on the subject. As I said for Tyystick...i will dig those books out and quote them and cite them for fact checking. They have specific breakdowns...

He was Lithuanian. He fought in the resistance to the Soviets, Germans and then the Soviets again. From 1941 to 1951. He escaped to England and was subsequently exiled from Lithuania or any other country that became part of the Soviet union after the war. They called him a war criminal / terrorist. Almost all of our family on that side was executed on his account....meaning sent on trains to Siberia to help build a prison that they would later live in...if they lived through all of that. Which they didnt. The other part of the family died in Soviet and German bombing/fighting.
He emigrated to Canada in 52. I wa5s born here.

The happy ending is he went home in 93 shortly after Lietuva claimed independence from the Soviet Union. He found a cousin. He died shortly after and I buried him there. The fucked won in the end...as did all those he fought with in the resistance.
His pentakus unit was closely aligned with the Polish/Lithuanian "Brothers of the Forest" which a shitty movie was made about....

My grandfather fought against the Japanese in the Pacific. He wasn't at Pearl Harbor but he did earn some decorations as a B17 turret gunner. I'm a bit of a history buff myself and I have even done some wreck diving.

He died when I was very young but I have seen his uniform and all of his military related stuff, medals and whatnot. My aunt keeps it along with the uniforms of other relatives, some still alive many deceased, even going way back, she even has my dress greens. There were over 1500 people at my grandfather's funeral and a lot of people have told me a lot of good things about him. It is quite possible that two of my great grandfathers fought against each other in Mexico. Not that it was anything personal. My mom's side is Mexican and I really wish I knew more about that part of my heritage.

Sorry to hear he died young. Your story is really interesting... I learned my father's history from the cousin we found. Dad wouldn't talk...i just had bits and pieces from him when he was drunk. He was a tortured sole and I have often wondered if he would have been better off to have died young .... because i watched him die slow from the guilt in killing so many people over a decade...as a child. He emigrated to Canada when he was 23, meaning he fought from the age of 12 to 21....almost every week.

I can imagine, not many of your dad's peers lasted. He was lucky to have made it to Canada. Especially Eastern Europe, I don't think most people can ever understand but it is important to try. Literally millions of people fought and died on different sides of wars for decades. Millions more were just victims of the brutality though they weren't even soldiers.
My dad was in Vietnam and he has only talked about it briefly a couple of times. I try to make it a point to write about my experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan but they don't compare at all to any of the wars we've been talking about. Even so I do find it difficult to talk about and that is despite that I have gone more than 5 years without a drink.
History keeps repeating itself...

Right out of high school I joined the Canadian Armed forces. Artilleryman. I did my 3 years and didn't remuster (never saw combat) because my dad didn't want me to endure what you and he did.
He told me once when I was really young...far too young, "when you kill you either like it and crave it or you don't....either way your fucked."
But.... never having been down that road I can never understand him completely. And I do regret that.

You should write it down. Maybe you never show it to Anybody. Maybe you do. But you'll be glad one day that you did. My father asked me to write his story but he client bring himself to tell it to me before he died.
But I did write it ... what i learned from his cousin. I published it too So somebody other than me might remember him. Turns out he was quite the hero in his hometown... most partisans did wht they could to help their townsfolk because it was their silence that allowed them to survive...
