Hey, you completely missed the context of what you quoted me on in the first part of your post. Here's my point: you're saying that no gov't should be taking your hard earned money, right?
Ummm no . . .

Well, are you claiming that you've never once been the recipient of gov't money? Come on. You completely went off base with your reply. Our tax dollars are, yeah, wasted on a lot of garbage. And I freely admit that I don't think we're going to see an end to that until and unless we are able to throw out the lobbyists; that's how we're going to solve this corruption.
Agreed . . .

Secondly, the libertarian argument that no government has the right to use our money has been debunked over and over again. If you drive on roads? You're using tax payer dollars. Public schools? Same. Libraries? Same. Rely on weather reports for anything, for your work, anything? Tax dollars.
Local roads= local taxes, state highways=local taxes, Schools= property taxes, Libraries= local funding, county run. So what did the federal government build? Interstates ok and where is the other 80% of my tax dollars going? And again I really like my tempurpedic.

Now, let's take it a step further. Are you aware that the US has a high rate of infant mortality compared to the other western industrialized nations?
Yes

Well, if that's okay with you (and I'm not implying that--I like a lot of what I see in your posts), then keep on rooting for the team that keeps our medical care and insurace in the hands of profit seeking enterprises. Sorry, when it comes to this issue, I really take issue.
I can not support handing over our healthcare system to a corrupt federal power. If you they can promise to eliminate spending on crap like "The War on Terror" I'm all for it because the money we spend on that alone would finance a wonderful social health program.

Don't know if you can relate, but I've seen it personally: people who've been good citizens, supporting their families, saving for their own pensions and retirements, only to find themselves left out in the cold when it came their turn to need. Yes, I'm talking about our elders who come down with diseases like Alzheimers, Parkinsons, cancer and so on. They lose it all, just to die destitute, their wishes to leave an estate for their heirs gone up in smoke in order to qualify for health care.
Absolutely agree.

I
hate that. I really do.

I have a neighbor who is a WW2 vet, whose wife is in a home and will never come home. He's been paying $6K a month for her care in this mediocre facility. He also goes to bed every night worrying himself sick that she's not being properly taken care of. Not only that, but this man, who worked his butt off his whole life and saved for their retirement, so as not to be burdens to his family OR to society, is watching his life savings evaporate all just because his wife had the misfortune of developing dementia.

Do you approve of a society that calls itself the greatest nation on earth allowing that to happen? To a vet? And a vet who worked on communications during WW2?
No I don't that is why I volunteer my time to work with Vet's.:peace:

I
do not. Hence, I believe our health care system needs revamping, big time. I think we are cheating our elders and our children.

Oh and Brutal? If you really think you would not mind watching your own parents' pensions and savings and assets go poof just because they got ill in their golden years, I think you have either not pondered this very deeply, or that you are speaking with a forked tongue. Just ponder it, and ponder hard.
I have no problem with social healthcare, hell my father is a military doctor. I would rather go to a military hospital any day . . . But tell me that our current federal government will provide us with a plausible social health program and I will not believe you.

Ooooh. ::::::snicker::::::: smugly, though.

Hey, New Growth? You're very generous to do volunteer work for the VA hospitals. Seriously.
I have many of the same beliefs as you Leilani, believe it or not . . .

Ever visited a low budget nursing home? Oh, you gotta see it.
No I have not:-?

You can tell a lot about a society by how they treat their elders and their children.
It's a sorry situation we've got going on here.
I agree

Tips? What time is bedtime? I'm so confused because of the time change tonight. But I'm really thrilled to be getting an extra hour. See? I am a socialist, so I will take anything for free. I'm a freeloader, in fact ;)
I'm not a freeloader just a slacker who does not agree with the Socialist idea of "wealth redistribution" as mr Obama puts it. For the record I in no way endorse Mccain either . . .:peace:

I give up. Almost.
Watching the news lately I have tried to think like an independant conscious person, made an effort to investigate, fact check, use a critical eye to see through the hype and canned political soup we are spoonfed every day. Just today I was struck by the fact that the impression our country makes right now in the world is one of cartoonish impotence and it pisses me off. Caricatures of "real people", well rehearsed phonies, a deliberate lack of substance and meaning in a constant parade across our fields of vision. A living breathing populace reduced to a monosyllabic name and their occupation, if they are lucky to have one. They get Names and Slogans, we get to be ___ the ____ and nothing more.

It's a desperate circus, many showman in many rings vying for your money and your suspension of disbelief. Better than any percentage of your pitiful wages is your utter and complete submission to whatever will keep you complacent.

What vice will ultimately shut you the hell up or keep you focused on it, not "them"? Make a reality show of it and see if they can hook you that way. Provide cheap and easy access to the best sedatives around, make the ones that broaden your mind illegal, allow an abundance of distractions to abound to flood your senses. Keep you guessing with the minutiae of a second by second play by play acted out by people lucky enough to be "important" unlike the rest of us Joes and Janes, people who likely don't share the opinions of the vast majority of us.

Substance is a scarce commodity, when you find it in people, cherish it. When you catch a moment of true connection, embrace it. Think like your opinion matters just as much as the people you see on magazine covers, more in fact because yours is likely based on a way more realistic picture of the world. Get inspired, share your best moments and try to enhance the experiences of those in your orbit.

Don't be a sheep, bleating pitifully for handouts from the ruling class who toss you scraps via Walmart. Grow your own everything. Choose your people wisely and dump the toxic ones. Take no bullshit. Sell no bullshit.

There are few things more effective to fight complacency than good ole honest conversation.

Um, no. The federal gov't spends quite a bit on roads, and not only on interstate highways.

Check this out:

Local News | Washington projects could be affected as federal fund for roads runs dry | Seattle Times Newspaper

Remember back before the summer season when McCain said he was all for doing away with the federal tax on gas? A lot of people were very upset about that because (1) it would not have made that much of a difference, and (2) those taxes go toward sustaining, or attempting to sustain, our infrastructure.

Also, check out this pie chart that shows what the budget is. The source for this thing is the whitehouse.gov

Federal Budget made easy - budget chart - cartoon

Regarding schools, you are correct to a certain extent; however, the federal government DOES contribute quite a bit to our public schools. It's just that the schools are primarily run by the states. You can see what the portion that is being spent by the feds is on that pie chart.

I think one reason we've gotten our lines mixed up here is that you were referring specifically and only to federal taxes, whereas I was referring to taxes in general, which would include state taxes, sales taxes, etc. I don't think it's a biggie, though, and yes, I agree that you and I do have some common ground (which I kind of said upthread a bit--"I like a lot of what I see in your posts"; something like that).

I can not support handing over our healthcare system to a corrupt federal power. If you they can promise to eliminate spending on crap like "The War on Terror" I'm all for it because the money we spend on that alone would finance a wonderful social health program.

Is that underlined part a typo? I'm thinking it must be, because I'm thoroughly disgusted with what is being spent on this bogus war on terror.

And yes, if you look at that pie chart, you'll see that if we reduced what we spend on being the LONE SUPER POWER, we'd have a lot of money left over for medical care, education, etc. It's shameful.

AND it's a damned business, this war machine.

Ever read or heard of Eisenhower's speech before he left office? He warned us against what we are now dealing with:

Military-Industrial Complex Speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961

My fellow Americans:

Three days from now, after half a century in the service of our country, I shall lay down the responsibilities of office as, in traditional and solemn ceremony, the authority of the Presidency is vested in my successor
.

snip.....

Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. We annually spend on military security more than the net income of all United States corporations.

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

Eisenhower was warning us against the military-INDUSTRIAL complex, which was ever so prescient of him; look at what we've got going on today.

I would encourage you to read the entire speech. It's not only very eloquent; I think it peers right into the heart of a man who loved his country deeply, but was sincerely worried about the business of war. It's well worth reading. It's relevant to 2008, for sure.

No I don't that is why I volunteer my time to work with Vet's.:peace:

This is where I'm getting confused with you. I believe you that you don't approve of a vet losing all his money due to outrageous health care costs; but you seem outright opposed to any revamping of our health care system. Am I wrong? Is your objection to such a notion that the federal government is corrupt? On that, we both agree.

Still, though, something has got to give. Look to Canada's health care, sure, but better, look at the way things are done in Germany. They are light years ahead of us in this respect.

I know it's frustrating. And there are days when I want to toss my hands up in the air and say, "Well, forget it. I have other things that need my attenion and this is never going to change." But I also feel a responsibility to be part of a solution. And yeah, part of that is doing what I am doing right this very moment: posting stuff on an Internet bulletin board. There is so much misinformation out there that too many people are just unaware of. I know it sounds utterly corny, but if push hard enough, hold them accountable and really mean it, maybe we can get things turned around.

Then again? Maybe not. I can't stand to think like that, however, because it steals hope from me. I have children. I want this world to go on for them (and for myself, and really, for everyone).

Frustrating, huh?

I have no problem with social healthcare, hell my father is a military doctor. I would rather go to a military hospital any day . . . But tell me that our current federal government will provide us with a plausible social health program and I will not believe you.

Google Germany's health care system. THAT is what I'd like to see. Do I think we will see it any time soon? Probably not. But I'd like to see us at least move in that direction. SEriously, check it out and let me know what you think.

I have many of the same beliefs as you Leilani, believe it or not . . .

Yes, I think so too.

I was only making a sarcastic comment, and it didn't even have anything to do with you. Sorry for any confusion. I was making fun of myself, calling myself a socialist or communist, because that's how we liberals are now being painted, that's all.

Regulation is a democratic idea, Greed is a republican

If Clinton's terms didn't prove democrats will save money and free us from this economic stranglehold i dont know what else will

think about it if you got a coulple of friend all pitch its easyer to fill the blunt

its a sad thing to smoke alone all the time. you got to have a little help from your friends right?

We still have 9 11 to answer for.. to not find Bin Laden would be a loss of face.. even though I don't think we have much face left!!

I hope Obama is for legalization with regulation, at the very least he better damn well acknowledge that the greatest and best way to help our economy out would be to legalize industrial hemp.

Who knows. I'm voting for him but I'm fully prepared to be disappointed by him, as with ANY politician no matter how eloquent and educated they are. The system is flawed and will eventually be the end of him however wonderful his intentions are.

it's a stupid and selfish thing to think that a country isn't better off with a democracy than a crazy man.
