Okay, so you posted a twenty-second clip from an entire speech that was mostly about community service. Where's the rest of the speech? I've looked and found a 26-minute portion of this speech (also on You Tube), and I've now wasted a whole lot of time searching not just google, but common dreams, freerepublic, etc, for the rest of this "national security force" that was highlighted in the twenty-second clip. I can't find anything other than stuff at freerepublic on this whole issue.
Here's what it looks like to me, and to the rest of you O supporters, you might want to look away, because you might not like this.
It seems that he deviated from the speech he was supposed to give, which was, as Natrone noted, primarily about community service, etc, among our middle and high school students, as well as university students (as a "pay back" for their educations, from what I understood).
So he deviated from that speech, and someone posted only that twenty-second sound clip.
There's nothing else, as far as I can find. I even looked at Daily Kos, and they LOVE to fight it over there. I checked a few more subversive liberal boards, looking for this information, someone to shed some light on it, and I cannot find it.
So. From what I can find, or rather not find, it looks like Obama deviated from the speech he was supposed to give, and tossed in that comment that you found on youtube. I don't know why.
Do I approve of it? Without hearing more about it, I really can't tell you. A national security force? Well, my first reaction is NO, I do not approve of that. We've got the FBI, the CIA, Homeland Security (a real joke if ever there was one). I'm also all for state's rights (which the Bush administration has done a fine job of trampling on). IF that twenty-second sound bite is exactly as you are painting it, Brutal, then I am WITH you on this one. No. We do not need Hitler Youth Groups (anyone recall Laura Bush's plans for Laura's Boys? sounded a little too much like Hitler Youth Groups to me).
But until someone can shed some more light on this, I'm in the dark. My impression is that no, I don't approve of something like that. If, however, we are talking about something akin to National Guard? Well, that's okay with me, esp since our National Guard is hardly a National Guard anyway at this stage of the game; they're now part of the military that's been deployed overseas.
I don't know. That's my final answer.
The rest of the speech, however, sounded okay to me. I see nothing wrong at all with middle and high school students doing fifty hours of community service. I don't buy it that they're too selfish to do that. And especially if it's mandatory, they really can't say they won't, can they? University students can certainly give 100 hours of community service.
I went to private schools and I was "forced" to do community service myself. I don't look back on that with regret. I also force my teenager to do things. He's a member of the Beta Club and they force him to do community service as well.
So that part, I have no problem with.
The rest of it? Until I know more, my first impression is NO.
So there. I've given you my best answer, agreed at least somewhat with you. But without knowing more, I can't say for sure.
And Brutal, your backpedaling on the Hitler-related comment is just not doing it for me. That was a crappy thing to say to me.
