I live in an area that's certainly not equatorial, but even at the summer solstice we only get ~14:30 of true daylight plus another hour of civil twilight on both ends.

15:30 would be a pretty meager light regimen for an indoor auto, so I was considering supplementing that light, with the idea being that I could move them into a tent at night and have the lights come on at midnight, run until ~8 am, and then I could take them out and let them get 10 hours of sunlight, totalling out at ~18 & 6.

I'm only going to be running three on my first go, but as they get larger moving them around seems like a bigger task. Will the outdoor light be sufficent or do you think it will have a significant impact on the plant's development?

My plan was to run them in 3 or 5 gallon fabric pots and maybe put them in the ground if the light cycle isn't an issue and they're doing well.

I don't grow plants outside in pots anymore, because I've found that some strains when given no root limitations (i.e. being in the ground) will take off and become huge. I want to give all my plants the opportunity to find their own limitations.

I'm at about 45.5ºN, I'm not even sure how long our days are, but I live in a neighborhood with lots of tall trees in my neighbors yards all around me, and June - August my backyard gets about 6-7 hours of direct overhead sun per day. That's it. On top of that, we have persistent issues with worms, so I have to grow under bug netting, which I understand cuts light by about another 20%.

Last summer I grew all Mephisto strains, I averaged 5-6 ounces each. They were frosty and sticky, but the buds were not dense, I have been told that with more light they would have been denser. I consider their lack of density to be a feature not a fuckup, because the airiness makes them less like to get moldy.

Since its your first grow in this location, I would try some in pots and some in the ground. If you get rain late in the grow, the ones in the ground you'll need to cover with plastic (over something like PVC hoops), the ones in the pots (it sounds like) you'll be able to take inside. 3 gallon is on the small side for outdoor growing, although I've seen people do it. I would imagine a 3 gallon fabric pot would need to be watered daily probably for at least the last month of the cycle. I'm giving my brother some plants to grow for me in his garden (we have a 4 plant limit per household) and those will be in 10 gallon pots.

I do my photo strains and clones in pots (mobility is key for bad weather during flowering got to get them out of rain) Autos I do them straight into killer soil mix in the ground.ccguns

I like pots for my plants other than Autos because I want to limit size (security reasons) in addition to the aforementioned mobility that it gives you, can't imagine putting in all my work and have to watch my fully budded girls get ruined by getting rained on.ccguns

Spent good$ on DP Lemon Skittles Auto lst yr. seedlings croaked due to dampening off . Also got a Mephisto Artisinal Auto CremeDELAChem to try this yr.ccguns

Like all Autos I really think you have to be a indoor grower to get the most performance out of them, Me being a outdoor guy just run a few to get some early crop knowing I'm not getting the full effect, They need to be BOMBED with light 20 hrs. to really impress.ccguns

I disagree. I grew six autos outside last year, even with my limited sunlight I got over 2lbs. All great quality. Exceeded my needs and expectations. More sun would have been better, no doubt, but even in semi-decent conditions they can perform well. I suppose if I were growing to sell it then I'd have other concerns, but for our private use, it's perfect.

Something I've done a few times which works really well is dig a hole in the ground, line it with finished compost, and drop the entire 10-gallon bag into it and let the roots grow through the fabric.

I also have a blumat system set up for my tent grow right now, so when those finish up over the next month I could easily set it up to feed the autos outdoors in coco or soil so constant feeding isn't a problem, though obviously once the blumats are set up, moving them in and out of the tent to max out their daily PPFD isn't an option any more.

I'm genuinely happy that you got that type of performance, I've got a tonof outdoor grow exp. and I just have'nt seen it, Overall I've seen Imoprovement in Autos but they have NEVER yielded like that for me. I'm in zone6 near the coast, Latitudinally equivalent to Nor. CAL maybe Mendocino area a decent area for outdoor grows but certainly not the best.ccguns

HSC, What do you run from them, I did Van.Frosting last yr. going to do it this yr. also still got 14R sds. I think VFrost is a great strain,glad I found it.ccguns

I'm running Hi-biscus, Caramel Cream, Magic Melon, and Hembra threw in a 3-pack of Blueberry Muffin. I have some running inside a tent right now that will be finishing in the next month and the ones outside.

The Magic Melon have been a pleasure to grow, really vigorous, responded well to training techniques, grew thick stems even in a 5-gal bag. Very consistent phenos and is easy to get into the kind of funnel shape people like for SCROG.

The Caramel Cream is the stretchiest of them, definitely put on the most length after the flip and just generally wants to spread out. Does not show a ton of lateral shoot development early on but very vigorous. The nugs are pretty, and they do start to take on a more caramel color later in the flowering cycle. First pic is the Caramel Cream.

The Hi-Biscus Shows a ton of lateral shoot development, also very vigorous. The Blueberry muffin and Hi-Biscus I'm running in the tent started later than the other plants, so I don't have an apples-to-apples comparison. There is some phenotypic variation in the Hi-Biscus where some plants will show more purple than others, but in terms of structure they've all been very consistent. Second pic is the Hi-Biscus.

I know people who work in the cannabis industry and Vanilla Frosting was very popular in California last year, and I've even had the privilege of seeing some potency/terp lab reports for it. It's essentially a really nice Gelato selection, the stuff smelled absolutely, capital "F", Fantastic.

I didn't even know about HSC at the time and only found out last summer/autumn about their stuff. But in retrospect, they've definitely got a presence in the CA cannabis scene. There are a number of instagram accounts for emerald triangle area commercial growers that run their stuff.

Cool, wow a in /out grower, a lot of work,I'd burn my house down growing inside I think,I found HSC kind of the same way as you, I also did LemonGrass which was'nt as phenomenal, They do pretty massive pheno hunts and take a lot of their strains to F4 or F5.The VanFrost is a Gelato crossed w/ a kind of mystery strain called Humbolt Frost. I had 4females last grow and they were quite frosty and also dense most banks now show it out of stock it's def going to be in my stable regularly now,hope its restocked by the time I run out of seeds. You must be in Cal. the mecca of cannabis I,m doing my thing in Mass. but at least it's a legal state.ccguns

Where do you get your HSC seeds? I keep confusing them with HSO. One or the other went out of business or had to temporarily stop producing... hard to keep track of it all.

I get mine from Hembra genetics because they're on the west coast (San Diego area) but they're definitely not the only place that carries them, DC seed exchange is an american east coast bank that carries their gear.

HSO is the one that got busted; they operated out of Spain. A lot of people swore by their genetics but the fact that they didn't just come out and say they were a Spanish company always sketched me out a little bit.

Right, it's coming back to me now. One thing about HSO that seemed appealing was that they rated their strains in terms of mold resistance, which is nice for outdoor growers. I also thought their name choice was misleading.

I'm west coast, so I checked Hembra out, nice that they take CC. I only saw HSC in 10 packs, more than I need.

This is the second place I've seen Night Owl seeds going for $50 for three seeds. If I got just one pack, with shipping (and tax) I'd be paying over $20 per seed, and they are F1's. I know Daz knows what he's doing and I'm sure he is expertly hand picking the phenos he uses from large samples, but I just can't go there. I hope he has the resources (and desire) to stabilize some of his Cosmic Queen crosses, they sound amazing.
