Germination

Thoughts on Jiffy pellets to germinate. My 2 remaining seeds aren't responding to the paper towel methos. Mephisto Genetics.

The jiffy method seems to have great success.

Personally I prefer rapid rooters.........but that's just me.
Lots of people use jiffy pellets with good success.
Good luck.

I use jiffy pellets for every seed I pop. I never soak seeds, germ in paper towels or anything else.

Straight in the presoaked pellet sitting in a germination dome with a heat mat. Seeds emerge for me typically in 4-5 days. Half the time I don’t even put the dome cover on.

All that to say that I’ve had great success with Jiffy pellets. Also as Herb mentioned, seed storage has a lot to do with germination rate.

That goes against everything you read nowadays. Good read though. People love what they love. So many recommendations for jiffy or Rockwool. I need to go get a spray bottle so I could mist the medium with ph'd water
What have you been reading?

Straight into moist substrate. Soil, coco, rockwool, Jiffy pellets, rapid rooters, etc... Plant seed and add water. No paper towel, dome, voodoo, etc...

I know I’m hard headed most of the time, but how does that go against anything you read nowadays?

To be very straight forward, it doesn’t get simpler than that. Straight into soil, provide the correct range of moisture, heat and a tad bit of light. Seed sprouts then you take care of it for the rest of its life.

Mother Nature has been doing essentially this since the dawn of time. Obviously on a different level because we humans like to interfere and make things more difficult lol. Point is that there’s no reason to over-complicate a simple process.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck:bigjoint:

Absolutely correct. You read water, then paper towels, then plant or soak, jiffy or rockwool, or right into jiffy or rockwool.

Do you recommend tip or the butt end down 1st?

Grow tent is 78 to 81 and rh at 65 right now.

Honestly, I never pay attention to seed orientation. Again, the whole Mother Nature thing. Think seeds were placed a specific way in the wild?
Temps should be good. I also use a germination heat mat to keep the medium warm. Helps ensure they germinate.

I want to plant directly in my 3 gallon pots. Isn't the temp in the tent warm already?

You should be good to go. I mentioned the heat mat because I sprout in Jiffy pellets. The mat helps keep them in the optimal heat range for germination. I’ve sprouted many times directly into soil, in Solo cups with drain holes without a heat mat. I tried to avoid sprouting in anything over 1 gallon. Personal preference.

I grow in 100% perlite Hempy buckets nowadays. Hence why I don’t sprout directly in soil anymore. Everything I’ve been saying applies to sprouting in soil or a jiffy pellet. I just go from a pellet straight to a Hempy as opposed to soil.

Edit: Problem of sprouting in a bigger pot, for some people, is they end up over watering. Learn to water a small plant in a big container properly and you’ll be fine.

My thought is to spry with a spray bottle about 3 inches around the seed. I would take a solo and create a void for plain soil with perlite. A 70/30 mix.

Jiffy pellets are ok if wet, its peat. Point up so the root does a 180 and the shell gets pulled off coming through the medium. Water appropriately when transplanted but wet, warm and deep to germinate.

i use them for hydroponics they dont seem bad. but for garmination allways wet towel. you probably dont have the temperature at your house.

I grabbed some jiffy. I was thinking about putting them in the tent.
