what if i was to go to lowes and buy one of those 70 watt hps lights they have up there would this be good for one plant in a small room? what if i got 2 70w hps? would this allow me to grow 2 or more?

they have 150w hps, or they should, the 150w would give you a much better setup
i think they cost the same as the 70w, or are very close

70 watts is an ok start.

What kind of bulb? At that low of wattage, the quality of the bulb is everything. Make you you use an agricultural grade bulb instead of the generic/industrial grade. However, you will have a better shot at finding good bulbs, a better selection, if you opt for 150 watt HPS since so many more growers start off with that.

As Growone says, not much of a price diff.

You'll get about 2 oz's off one plant if you do it right w/ a 70 watter. A QP, roughly, with 150 watts. 2 oz's off 2 plants each is feasible with 150 watt hps.

speaking of which, do those 70w hps need a ballast? and if so do they sell all you need as far as a fixture and everything at lowes or home depot?

Tiger has a point. Unless the size of your space is severely limited and heat is a big issue spend your money and time more wisely. You can definitely pick up a great compact system for under $100, just shop around. Ebay is a good start actually. If you decide to go with the 70w I suggest focusing your time on just one healthy plant. You can definitely pull a nice personal stash every harvest if you play your cards right.

question 2 lol. itd be nice to have a couple smaller hps lights for my future scrog, could i buy the parts separately and have it be cost effective? if not i'll probably end up buying another 150

thats not what they have at the store here its a whole system and its cheap i beleave it was 30-40 dollars it was an outdoor light you would see on a pole but i figured it'd grow a plant or so haha....im about to harvest my outdoor grow and i KNOW what i harvest wont last the winter so im trying to get somthing going so i can kinda keep a good suply till the next outdoor grow.

lowes website is way more expensive than home depot and the cheapest complete rig i saw was the one i post lol. ebay has hps kits if your electrically inclined. plus you wont have that stupid fixture lol

i paid like 85 bones for my 150w HPS locally and they have them online for 69 bucks even, plus shipping. not a bad price for what you get. i love my light :)
