Mind you, a nuclear war would be a disaster of a scale not seen since the black Death. But like that pandemic, its effects would be temporary. mankind wouls handily survive, and probably the backbone of civilization and industry, as well ... with the added incentive of territory to recover.
At the current rate, the only resources we're really using up are fossil fuels. Other energy sources are on the horizon ... they're there to be developed for when the economic pressure to use them becomes strong enough. Jmo. cn

How bad are things in Japan? They have small "hot" patches, but the amount of disinformation and just plain catastrophism about the magnitude of the Fukushima releases is something to behold. Japan was a smaller event than Chernobyl, and that left a shrinking scar in a localized bit of Ukraine.
If Fukushima were truly as bad as some want us to believe, we'd already be seeing thousands of delayed rad injury cases, Hiroshima style.

I'm not a nuclear pro, but I've been reading about nuclear energy (both prompt and sustained) for most of my life ... i acquired the interest when i was twelve. Granted, most of my reading was from a physics/engineering perspective, which has a certain amount of advocacy built in. See, that I did not know. About the radiation thing. Yes, we are using fossile fuels at a rapid rate. And I agree that there are various sources of alternative energy. But what about the whole deforestation thing? That's another resource that's being used up rather quickly. I know in my county, there's a lot of trees being cut down for wood chips and paper pulp. My step-dad runs a skidder and drives truck for the company that does it. It takes a long time for trees to regrow, and a lot of these companies aren't replanting. What about that? Trees are an essential part of filtering carbon dioxide and replenishing oxygen levels, right?
