Afghan Kush Ryder & Boss Hogg 2nd grow!

Hello all,
Yesterday I got my beans in the mail, 3 afghan kush ryder and 2 boss hogg regs(ufo freebies)
I am using the water in a cup germination method to get em popped, then I plan to move them to a moist paper towel.

Day 1 BG(before germination)
I've got both boss hogg in a cup with 500ml of water and rooting stimulant mixed in there as well, the first darker colored seed immediately sank to the bottom where as the other took about a day. I have moved both into my nightstand in a paper towel.

The reason I germed these first is because my grow tent arrives in two days and these are more of test plants(the ufo freebies, not the AKR's) I used two diff germ methods to test, one with a sponge and paper towl in some water filled tupperware, the other with a cup of water, also tried just plain paper towel wetted on one of the AKR seeds today and didnt like results after about 10 hours so I changed it to a water cup.
I am growing the boss hogg ahead of the AKR by a few days so when I go through vital stages like transplanting I can try it on the boss hogg first to make sure the babies wont get all goofed, I plan to veg the boss hogg for about 4-6 months anyways so I ain't worred about them
Day 2
Today I am putting the 3 afghan kush ryders in a diff cup to germ with same mixture except I am scuffing 1 of the seeds to see how well it works.
A few hours later the boss hogs popped check out the pics!

I am germin the AKR'S under my nightstand with a portable heater in a cup of water, so far it has worked well for me so if it aint broke don't fix it. After they pop I move them onto a small plate about w/ a 3 inch diameter and place a wet wrapped up paper towel with the seed inside on the plate. I then cover the plate with that there purple bowl you see (or any other bowl I just like purple) I place it in the drawer of the nightstand right above where the glass is, this gets it better warmth and less light, I don't know if you can see the hygrometer but it was running 94 fahrenheit in that drawer lols, so I cracked it open a smidge and turned the heater from 3/4 full(the knob is exactly the same as you would find in a car for the portable heater) to about 1/4 and now its 84-89 oops It just hit 93 again, okay so I have moved the heater a little farther away and tried to turn the knob a little lower but it clicks and turns off, I dont know if this is because It's already at the temp I am trying to go to or something lol, so I cracked the drawer again and I am thinkin I will just go grab a timer to let it run for 15 minutes every 45 minutes to try and keep it around the 80's

So about 1 1/2 hours after the AKR's were dropped in none have sank, even tried pushing them down a bit(with latex gloves on)

Have you guys heard of this new little invention called the Moisture Sensor Meter? I've seen people spend $100+ on those lol, I know the signs of over/under watering plants however this did sound pretty cool so I looked it up and found one for like 10 bucks;

Imagine having just one of those in one of the plants(assuming they are all about the same age, size, and strain) and it tells you when to water your garden
I have heard of these things called hydro spikes? Anyone ever heard of using those on a more permanent basis? I am only going to be using tap water and soil to feed the plants this grow so that would be pretty convenient.

Update! The seeds have drifted toward the center of the glass and I tapped them 2/3 fell to the bottom! Should I leave them in the water for another day then move to paper towel for one last day or skip the paper towel method?


I realize I am majorly impatient and shouldnt mess with the seeds that much but I am impatient and seeing no visible change in the Boss hogg seeds(not unusual in under 48 total hours) I changed it from a folded up paper towel on plate under bowl to a folded up paper towel in a half zipped up ziploc bag and one had a little root coming out so I popped it into the Hydrofarm germination station, do I use the lights now or do i leave them off? I turned them off for now just in case it needs 24 hours in the dark. The little BH is in a jiffy peat pellet and I have it under a flouro light.

Once again I am using these seeds as my control for the AKR's so I will see which method of paper towelism works best and use it on them all.

Okay so all of the seeds now have cracked and letting them sit till morning then moving them to paper towel on windowsill for one last day of germ

After the seeds outgrow their peat pellets can I move them to their final pots? or should I transplant to a smaller cup then to final pot, norm i'd go straight to their final for an auto but I am putting 1 cup horse manure 1 cup blood meal 1 cup bone meal and 1 cup kelp powder in there with some Fox Farms happy frog organic potting soil, will it burn the plants? PLEASE respond someone lol its like this is a ghost town, I don't want my girlies to die! Someone help me out por favor! I have been scouring the forums for someone who has grow/grows AKR and is still active, awesome sawsome for me none are active and 99% of them never even finished their grow journals DX
So I ask of you all, fellow members of RIU, fellow marijuana enthusiasts, please stand up......and tell me what to do lol.

Im interested in this boss hogg youve got goin. Cant find too much info on it though.

As far as if your plants would be good with those nutes and,transplanting,I AINT GOT NO IDEA.

i GO FROM PEAT POT, TO SOLO CUP TO GALLON POT TO 3 GALLON POT.

I was mainly a MANDALA seeds guy and,the strain i grew,DIDNT CARE FOR ANY,ANY,nutes.

One time i did a fish ferts FOLIAR SPRAY and,when i came back my whole crop looked like someone had doused everything with acid. EVERYTHING WAS BURNED ALIVE. Scary looking.

So,i guess a lot depends on the strain.
And,im watching yours,CAUSE I DONT KNOW ABOUT THE STRAIN YET

Glad to see someone finally stop by! I was about to stop posting but I will keep you updated man. So the boss hogg sprouted yesterday and I planted the other boss hogg that same day. I have also planted all 3 akrs this morning we will see how it goes.

Hey CaliTHC, I`ll follow this one along. Guessing you haven`t tried tr strain before? I got lots of kush experience so I may be able to pass along some stoney wisdom from time to time . Like CJJ said, I ALWAYS up-pot, helps control size of your plants and a healthy root system. I let my plants get almost pot-bound before transplanting to make for rapid expansion. I pot-up 4 times with is unnecessary, but it`s best to go from at least the peat pellet to a half gallon and again to a 3-5 gallon for flower. Yes, finally have everything set up! Only two of the three AKR's sprouted one being a little mutant, I thought it would die because it lost a cotyledon so early on in its life but its still going strong and the stem stopped drooping over since I have transplanted so I am doing something right hahaha. Oh and only one of the boss hoggs sprouted however she is coming along nicely(hopefully a girl) has a nice strong stem and is only a little bit behind the AKR in terms of new growth.

Yeah I would normally pot up but because they are autos they like to start in their final pots. So I transplanted them into 5 gal nursery pots with 4 gallons of happy frog and 1 cup kelp 1 cup bone meal 1 cup blood meal 1 cup super manure. I added a layer of hydroton to the top of the best looking seedling being the AKR(I only had a little left) Now they are all working on their second node, they sprouted a day or two before april 1st and I got them transplanted by april 3rd. Looking at the boss hogg one of the tips is looking yellow brownish, I am thinking nute burn but I am watering with just tap. The AKR has long fat indica leaves and they are looking kind of pale yellow green towards the tips. I know its kind of hard to diagnose without pics but my iPhone died, so I will post some pics in about an hour or so, and the whole leaf is kind of looking pale green then yellow greenish headed towards the tips but as for the boss hogg its just the little tip looks a little burnt. I also forgot to mention that I had my 400W like 10 inches from them for a day or two before I figured out you start high and lower it, woops. The temps were at 75,83,91 when they got to 91 it was because somehow my ac became unplugged, I plugged it back in and then raised the lights a foot or so and the temps have been in the 70's ever since. I have a RH of 40-59%


edit: I was thinking of foliar feeding some nutes

Edit2:after I finish up these autos I am going to see if cloning the AKR works, if not boo hoo I will start a perpetual harvest with boss hogg and maybe thc bomb using only one tent on a 12/12 from seed to harvest light cycle.

Sounds like you`ve got a plan mate. Haha, thinking for something for everything I read only to be supplied with the answer following sentence, haha. You addressed the `tip`problem already, light was too close, otherwise you`re rippin`man. I only mist my plants with distilled + 1 drop / Litre of Superthrive, no nutes. Let your root system handle the feeding, misting will assist in minimizing transplant stress. Roots don`t have the burden of trying tp affect persiration in the leaves as normal with a supplemental misting, allows them to focus on expansion. Food for thought . Keep it up, I`m enjoying this, pictures soon!!

Upon further inspection of the AKR i see a few ( 1-3 ) little spots on one leaf, its like a circle and kind of greyish, I shrugged it off as my mistake on mixing the soil up, probably has a few hot spots lol. What do you think about the yellowing leaf? I was thinking it was a nitrogen def and was going to add 1/4 cup of blood meal to the top of the soil and give it a little water. I thought better of it and let it be for 10 hours, came back and its farther along with its second node than the boss hogg, so I guess it couldn't be that because N deficiencies slow growth, and the incoming leaves look fine. Could it be the lights doing this as well? Lol, come to think of it the lights being so close when I misted with water could have made those little spots on the leaf as well right? Also its only one leaf that looks like this, and towards the start ( or beginning part I guess, where it is fatter) of the leaf it is darker green. If the lights are really going to do that if they get to close I am going to have to lst these girls because I only have 5 feet of height to work with.

Also I have heard of people using a water bottle with the bottom cut off buried up to a few cm above the cap using a thumbtack to poke a few holes in the cap, you just refill from the bottom when the water gets low. I was skeptical when I used a thumbtack to poke a hole in the cap it's just a steady stream into the sink lol, wouldn't this keep the soil constantly moist not allowing roots to grow? Correct me if I am wrong here?

edit2: I will try that superthrive foliar mix soon, I am currently using my mister for a neem oil mix, I spray all around the perimeter of the building, and all over any entrance from the outside, then on the inside I spray all over the walls( I have a tent inside ) and then on the outside of the tent. This is just what I do to prevent mites and other aphids, I take a more aggressive approach if they get past my primary line of defense.

Looking good bud. Don`t think your issue is nutrient deficiency at this point thought, looks like the soil is too hot. You`re actually burning them. Shouldn`t really require much if any nutrients at this point, let the roots do their job and adapt to the soil. Ride it out mate it looks good otherwise. Keep it green,

Awesome thats what I like to hear! I will be watering the AKR and Boss Hogg sometime later today as their soil still feels a little bit moist with the knuckle/finger method however the mutant seems to be doing well, it looks like it only grows regularly on the side with the cotyledon. Looking at that leaf on the akr it seems as if that problem has stopped now that I have fixed the lighting and temps. The duct tape is coming loose on my ac unit to the ducting, any ideas to keep the connection solid? I was running 79 and I saw I had an airleak so I fixed it, I am at 70-79 now. I think I am going to start personally watering the girls as they all seem to react a little different to what I am doing. I don't know if I am the only one who sees this but doesn't it look like the Boss Hogg has upward turning leaves?

Edit; I might just wait until tommorow to water the other girls but the mutant got some water in the morning, I will be using 2L coke bottles to water since I have 5 gallon pots.

Sheet metal tape (silver tape) will do the trick for you here. Meant exactly for this purpose.

Hahaha yeah I tend to do that. Thanks for the tip on the AC! I will buy some today. I am not trying to stunt em hahaha, I hope I can get both of the AKR to grow up beautifully. I am going to be growing boss hogg and landrace afghan kush next grow

Wont be able to stop by the hardware store before work today unfortunately so I will have to keep laying on the duct tape. I just hooked up my inline fan (only has 100cfm ) to my light instead of just hanging in the tent, so now its sucking the hot air out of the tent through the light, cooling the light as well. Also I am going to add another hose to my ac unit and run it in from the top so it has ac coming top and bottom , this way the whole tent is cooled not just the bottom area.

I have finally managed to get 75 degree fahrenheit and 46% humidity, now all I want to add is a DWC system and maybe one of those tower fans that you can add ice to! I saw this little machine at my local hydro store that you just fill with ice and it cools down your grow room, sound familiar to anyone? I am looking to get one online maybe. If anyone knows a cool diy dwc system it would be appreciated if you could point me that way as I have decided to try out hydro for the next grow.
