Yeah, don't water it. Your soil is going to screw you up on this grow, and the most dangerous thing will be overwatering it. As a seedling, just use a little spray bottle to keep the soil around the seedling's base moist, but not soaking wet. Give it five good sprays every 12 hours, and leave it at that. Once it's got new leaves shooting out, then pay attention to the weight of your pot. Feeling to see if the surface is dry won't work well for you because there's water being held in the soil. My best advice is throw out that soil and get some meant for what you're growing. People can grow in anything, but this is your first grow and you're needlessly complicating it by introducing a soil that a more experienced grower could probably make work, with some trial and error.
