New Loft Grow Room - Input Appreciated

Day 23 update Given them a foliar rhizotonic feed, benny tea and topped up nutes to 600ppm again. They seem to be drinking about 5-6L a day at the moment. Res change due every 14 days. There is some slimey/furry build up only on the rubber grommets which connect the buckets again but the roots...

Nope. There's a brick chimney stack behind that celotex insulation. When I took that pic I was standing in the doorway; which is a zipper stuck onto plastic sheeting. It can be tight in there!

    Fan/duct connection

You need duct reducers to make this work. I would just buy some 8 inch ducting if you have more than 1 connection though. Cheaper than buying a load of reducers and 8 inch ducting would be fine for 8 inch fans/filters. Also the less connections you have the less likely you are to have smell leaks.

Hahaha! My back is just about holding up! Drying is a bit of an unknown. I have a 1x1x2m tent I could possibly use in a spare bedroom for a week. Load it up with a carbon filter and put a dehumidifier in the room set to 60%? Alternatively I could use one of the 8x4m tents for a week? The plan...

germination is the seed dead? (pics)

Why would you put it back in water?! The tap root starts to grow out in search of water. If you have it too damp (like in a glass of water) it'll just stop. The purpose of putting it in water is to soak it and get it to swell/crack. Once it's cracked it needs to be somewhere it can grow. Plant...

Dam heat already messing things up...T-5 grow as plan B

Consider changing to 315w CMH lights. Heat of a 250w HPS but yield of a 500w HPS. T5s would be a step backwards. They're not as efficient so you'd be decreasing wattage/heat and dramatically cutting yield too (or same wattage/heat and still less yield).

3 week (day 20) update Topped up to 600PPM and applied 3rd dose of bennie tea today. I'm going to go with a res change every 2 weeks unless I spot something dodgy going on I think. That way I can coordinate brewing tea with my res changes. Roots looking good: They have that shiney fish...

germination is the seed dead? (pics)

Don't fuck with it. It's probably too wet, too hot or too cold. It needs to be damp but not too wet. At this stage plant it in your medium. Keep it warm (around 22-23C) and not too wet. If viable it'll grow.

    Controlling smell with portable ac?

A portable AC has to vent the heat energy it's removing from the grow area plus the electrical energy it's using. So it'll heat up the air on the hot side just like putting a massive heater there. Luckily carbon filters are tolerant of heat. Phresh filters are rated to a max working temp of...

The pulley came today: Put a hook above the loft hatch and hung it up... what a mission! Managed to haul the AC unit to the loft entrance and then it was a real nightmare pushing it up from underneath. 2 people would have made life much much easier. At one point I did wonder what would...

    Still can't germ seeds

The seeds need 3 things to pop. 1. warmth 2. wetness 3. time If you put them somewhere wet and warm they will almost always germinate within 2 weeks (usually quicker). Don't check on the seeds by digging them out when you plant them. There is nothing you can do to make them germinate faster so...

    Bleach instead of H2o2

150ml... that's a LOT! You should be aiming for 1-4 ppm of chlorine. Have a look at this bleach calculator: https://www.publichealthontario.ca/en/ServicesAndTools/Tools/Pages/Dilution-Calculator.aspx Typical bleach is like 5.25%. You should have put 2-8ml in TOTAL volume of 100L for 1-4ppm...

Some root porn. Check out the hairy mycorrhizae covered roots! Applied the second dose of tea and upped PPMs to 600. Some leaves are showing signs of ozone damage. I think it has it's place but definitely have been converted to a benny believer! I was going to top after 3 nodes but I think...

looking for a timer that will change fan settings.

In that case... Use a timer and a DPDT relay. "Normally open" circuit goes to a Variac set to 90%. "Normally closed" circuit goes to a Variac set to 20%. When your timer is powered on the fans run at 90%. When your timer is powered off the fans run at 20%.

looking for a timer that will change fan settings.

SMSCom 4.5-Amp Twin Fan Speed Temp Controller (don't bother with the cheaper older 4 amp version which apparently hums). Only works on 240v though (made in the Netherlands). They come with cable glands to hard wire or EU/UK plug sockets. Supposed to be a great bit of kit. Not sure if anything...

TV sounds like waay too much hard work! Had an incident with the RDWC pump blocking off this morning. Mixed up 1/4 dose nutes and an hour later nothing seemed to have mixed. pH and EC were all over the place in different buckets. Checked the pump and there was no flow to the res. Isolated it...

timers issues, which brand do you use?

You need a contactor rather than a normal timer. When HID lights start they need a lot of current to spark up (as much as 4-10x the current the bulb is rated at). The current then stabilises at what you know to be the bulb wattage rating (600w, 1000w etc) within a second. Most mechanical...
