I've only heard of coffee grounds as an addition to the compost pile. I had a similar experience with wood ash. I poured some on a portion of my garden and the subsequent plants were stunted and off color. In that case I realized the pH of wood ash is quite high. I don't know if pH is a problem...

When I have voles, I can poke the soil with a crowbar in various places and find cavities underground. Easy to test for in my experience.

Also checkout fusarium disease. It can kill branches while leaving other branches healthy. If it is fusarium you want to remove those branches and disinfect your clippers with alcohol or high heat.

I've use Mole Repellant from Lilly Miller. It's a liquid which is spread around the perimter of the plant. The voles vamoos pronto. I've used it to keep voles away from my fig trees. It's derived from the castor bean but they process it so it is harmless.

I've been doing the same to my plant and now it is time to let it go vertical as you said. Any stray shoots that climb too fast I will bend (supercrop). Here at 42 degrees I expect flowering will comence in 3 to 4 weeks.

California is a long state. I would expect alot of difference in flowering time from San Diego to Yreka.
