His growth medium is prolly quite good, but I think his goal with it is consistency and ease. He needs medium which is as consistent as possible between plants to show how different parameters affect the plants.

No, this is my first time growing tomatoes indoors. Last summer I grew tigerella keatky style on the balcony and got hooked. The bonsais you posted seen to grown about the same size as tiny tim. Looks great! Leds these days are so efficient that by my calculation even tomatoes should be cheaper...

Screw ins are not a bad choice for a cheap light, but the efficacy will be low compared to a proper fixture. If indeed the power dropped by 50% in a quality led fixture (which i doubt) it would still have as good or better efficacy than screw ins.
