its a confusing thing to figure out. but they compare the amount of red light given out by the LED lights to that of an HPS. a red wavelenght is what plants will primarily use to grow. so they compare the 2 because the led will give out as an example, one and a half times the amount of red light...

really comparing a LED and an HPS is totally different. their power is listed in different ways. for instance you can find any HPS rated by watts like 150. an LED system is rated this way purely for power consumption information. and LED system uses the specific light spectrum that plants need...
