600W aeroponic/DWC medical closet grow

Alright, where to begin. My name is Thatguy. I love long walks on the beach Danielle Steele novels and pasta dinners. Actually I dont really like any of those things at all. I do like pot. I have since I was 15. This is my first ever grow journal. I live in Southern California, where is currently "legal" to grow for medicinal use. The reason for this journal is so that A: you people can help me solve my $&*@-up's (there will be plenty) and B: I can keep a log about what happens.

The inspiration behind me finally getting the balls to do this is the user "Jigfresh" Im a fan of his grow journals and because he was able to put his grows online, I was able to learn. I want to spread that on "pay it forward" (that was the last crappy movie reference you will see) to the other users out there trying to grow their own medicine. Jigfresh is a nice guy, who always treats the people online with respect, I will do the same. I guess I also connect with his journals because hes a cat person, so am I. I am looking forward to his input.

O.K, On to the goods. I'm currently growing 6 plants, this is currently my limit of plants without a new doctor recommendation. I have 2 Skywalker plants, 2 white diesel, 1 headband, 1 white widow. Currently, I dont have plans for a ScroG grow or a SoG grow this time around. I'm so new, I don't know how to do that stuff yet (please teach me, I would love to learn)

Also, I think I should tell you. Im already in my 3rd almost 4th week of vedge. I know.. I know... but Im still paranoid about putting pictures up. Gimme a break.

Ok so where to start. Im growing in a 5ftX7ftX7ft space, its a walk in closet. Im a man, I dont need a walk in closet. Walk in closets are for women and weed. Here is the door.



I removed the door at its hinges and installed this nifty tarp zipper door. The ducting is my exhaust from my light/carbon filter. The hole in the bottom left is my passive air intake (I believe that's the term) You can see my temp display on the wall. Ok lets look inside.


Here is my hood, you can see that the intake to exhaust is only about 12 ft of ducting. Its straight from the filter through the hood and out through the tarp-door.






so as you can see. Im cheap. Im not cheap as most, but Im broke. So all you macgyvers out there get to really break out the knowledge. Onto the girls. See below.



As you can see below, I have them in a 25 gallon res. The net pots vary in size from 3'' to 6''. The top is yellow, I know. but its all I could use. I put hydroton on the top to try to keep light out. Its my first grow, so Im trying different things to see what works best for me. all these plants are the same age. Although they are all clones, I have no idea how old the mother were when they got cloned. the growth has been amazing so far with few problems.



Here are some roots. As you can see, I need to do something. They are brown on top, and some people have suggested that this could be because of hydroton, but I don't think so, I fear this could be the rot monster Ive heard so much about.

I really hope that you guys will help me through this. I hope that together we can learn and grow a really fine batch of medicine. Just keep it nice, that's all I'm asking. Commence grow. 1 2 3 go!

i had some roots go that way, it could be root rot but most likely alge due to your yellow tops letting light in, are all the roots the same? i will upload a pic of my roots on my next update. paint or line the top of your res with something that is light proof. i have black 4 gallon pots so not had much of a problem. keep up the good work looking sweet

Yea, Heres the thing. Im pretty sure the brown IS because the top is letting in too much light. Im guessing, because the roots look white as hell below the nutrient/water line. Only above the water, closer to where they hang down are they brown. As I said before, Im pretty broke. So a quick fix isnt going to happen. When I get paid in a week, Im going to get the silver shiney ducttape and cover the top, as I don't think I can paint it, this far into a grow (The fumes would kill the plants).

I just gave the ladies their weekly feeding. I'm just topping off their reservoir with some RO water (5gal) that I left oxygenating overnight with a 6'' bubble-stone in it. This is what I added to the 5 gal bottle

Sensi Grow A 50ml
B 50ml

Calmag 20 ml

GH Flora Bloom 10ml (I don't plan on flowering for 3 weeks but I'm just slowing giving them more and more bloom mixed into their diet)

GH Flora Micro 15ml

GH Floralicious plus 1ml

I dont have a PPM meter yet, still kinda broke. But Ive been doing this from the start and my plants have loved it. No burn or lockout yet. If any of these numbers look off to you, let me know and I can adjust them. I dont check ph before I put in the nutes. I usually mix the nutes in, and oxygenate them with the stone for another hour or two before I check and adjust ph before feeding.

As you can see, I do have room for the light to go up. I would like to move it up atleast a foot or two. Anyhoo. Thats the update for now.

An overall shot would be good to kinda feel what set up you got there. The roots don't look too happy. Do you know the temp of your water? And when did the sludge start in your grow?

What's up with the Voodoo Juice? I thought that was for soil for some reason. I guess I'm mistaken.

One thing just to get you prepped for what's coming. Doing 4 different strains in one dwc tank will probably get you 2 good strains, 1 ok strain, and 1 that isn't very good. Maybe you get lucky and they all like the same stuff. I just know that my Hindu Skunk and White Widow grow turned out good for the HS, but the WW was basically unsmokable. They didn't like near the same ammount of nutes.

No REAL sludge in the res, just on the upper roots, the lower roots look white and pretty. Um. Dont know the water temp, but its high, too high. I read about somebody freezing water in a 2L bottle and putting it in the res to help temp. Im afraid it could harm the roots. Im stealing your idea with the silver ducttape. Im going to cover my whole res and buckets in it.hopefully that should help.

Noo sir, voodoo is for everyone! its highly regarded by master hydro growers. This is my first grow, and I learned really quickly how amazing this stuff is. Although Home and Garden makes this stuff in a silver can that is supposed to blow voodoo away! its $100 bucks though. Im really hoping to get some ASAP. Voodoo is fucking amazing though dude. Ive seen 6+ inches of rootgrowth overnight using it. Its a godsend.

Yes sir, it is. My hydro guy said it works wonders. Im not organic, but the plants seem to like it and it doubles as food for the enzymes (hygrozyme) in the res.

Do you know any info on the Skywalker, and White Deisel... I never heard of those before. And did you get the clones from a local store?

I know Skywalker is a cross between a Mazar Male and a Blueberry female. It is by far my favorite all time strain. Dude, you need to try this. When I can afford to, I will buy some, drive to big bear with my girlfriend and blaze you a bowl. Its one of the most popular and expensive strains in all the LA/OC/SD dispensarys. Ive paid $90 just for an eighth of it before. Amazing.

No, I have very little growing experience. I grew once outside. I planted a seed I got in a sack into the ground in my old backyard. the plant grew to 6 or 7 feet, probably a hermie but I didnt know. I smoked some of the buds... horrible horrible stuff. Ahh to be young again.

This is my first REAL grow. I got a check for $1400 for some work I did, and I thought that I could invest it into growing my own meds as right now, I spend $400-500 a month on them. Im broke right now, and I have no pot So hopefully once this grow ends I should have meds for a while. HOPEFULLY!

Yea, Ive never heard of Odyssey. That would be awesome to trade with you. I can hook you up with some skywalker clones I would LOVE to see you grow a SCROG of Skywalker. You would kill it bro. You should go to the THC Expose in LA this month. Search GOOGLE for THC EXPOSE.

I have added a 1L frozen bottle of water to my res in an attempt to cool the water down. After feeling the res with my fingers, it felt like the water could have been in the high 70's

Just checked the temp of the res with my fingers again. It seems to have cooled a bit 5-10 degrees. Lets see in a few days.

Ok, quick question. I have a lot of purple stems. Is this a deficiency of some sort? As a stoner, my gut says this is a good thing. As a medical patient worried about his meds, Im.. a little worried about my meds. So here are some pictures I just took 3 min ago. Tell me what you think.

Purple stems is usually a sign of a deficiency but can sometime be strain traits(not usually if all your strains are doing it). I dont remember which it is. On a side note fom the first post, if you have a 400w mh in the 600w dimable balast, it shouldnt work, and they say not to do that on their site. The dim is meant for having a 600w bulb that can be dimmed down to be as bright as a 400w.

Thanks for the info. My hydro guy said they dont make 600W MH bulbs and my ballast would be able to run a 400w bulb fine. Ive never heard that before. Thanks again.

Feel free to double check in your manual or on their site. They dont make actual 600w MH bulbs, but they sell 600wMH conversion bulbs. But the better route is to just get an enhanced spectrum hps bulb. I use the Ushio Opti-Red, Son Agro is another option. My buddy uses the Hornilux enhanced Spectrum. They all hive a higher level of blue, violet, and red spectrums than a regular hps and are good for veg or flower.

hmm good to know. I will look into that. I only have another week or two of vedge left, so I think Ill just rough it out until flower. But good info on the HPS bulb. I have yet to buy one yet.

i've also read that purple streaks on stems can be a trait of the strain, nute deff and cold temps at night! pretty much all mine do it so dont worry 2much bro! looking good so far
