Well, the waiting is almost over. The aerogarden arrives tomorrow!
I have grown before, but this is my first time with the aerogarden or any other clone of hydro technology. Thats right, I used a cloning pun. Got some seedlings sprouting in the ol' paper towel and I ordered the full fox farms line for hydro and flowering. I really just had three quick questions right now...until the madness begins.
I ordered a 150 watt 16,000 lumen hps bulb to supplement the aerogarden. I know this question gets asked a lot, but is this enough? total wattage in a perfect world would be 18,900 lumens WITH the aerogarden lights on. I am not familiar as yet with the dimensions of the garden but I do know that there are many factors, especially light, that determines your crop. Give me straight poop, and let me know.
In the event that the foxfarms nutes don't come in w/ the garden, can i simply put in distilled water of a proper p.H. (if it isn't already, lol) and start them until i receive my good nutrients. Or, do i need to wait until those arrive? I'ts my understanding that over feeding seedlings can hurt them so I wondered if starting them in this way might actually be beneficial if one prefers to be cautious, that is. Anyway, my other question is for anyone who actually knows, specifically Tek, as he has had a rewarding relationship with his aerogarden: Do i need a cleansing agent for the end of the bud cycle? I saw on the online chart that it was there, but it seems silly to buy a product to do what distilled water can do to a plant...thanks all,

My friend moved his plants around during the early stages of vegetation, and they did indeed increase the vigour of the plants.

He also trained the plant by putting stakes in the pods and training the main stalk along it with twist ties. It works very well, and the stem will get to be larger than the size of your thumb, with the new vertical branches growing from it now being that much smaller if you allow them to mature.

I finished his grow for him when he went out of town, so I've had pretty extensive experience with this little aeroponic wonder. Unfortunately guys, that substantially thicker and healthier turned out to be the only male/hermaphrodite out of the bunch.

But there was a nice looking femme fatale grown to a height of about 4 1/2 feet. You can do this by removing the hood and making the modifications other posters have suggested. It's quite easy. But if you decide to let the plant get that large, be sure you have lots and lots of lighting. Without adequate light, many plants will start autoflowering, which is horrific if you have a 24/7 lighting schedule... It won't become crystal clear that the plant has been trying to flower for a while, as it will still look like it is simply in the pre-flowering stage, but growing rapidly. This sort of happened to me, but thankfully, I caught it early on.

Foxfarm recommends 1 1/2 teaspoons diluted into your water when you dump it, but I found that this burns the plants a bit, especially since the reservoir isn't huge. It won't harm your plants seriously though, and they will eat it up, but it's a bit too much. I used everything from 1/4 of a tablespoon when the plant was flourishing well (and there were already nutes in the reservoir) to 1 teaspoon for a large feeding. It worked well for me.

And that lighting should be fine, but it depends on how big you want to grow your plants, whether you'll be tying them down, etc.

Thanks for the reply, Ethno. Like you said, less is more for the nutes. I read all of the aerogarden posts after I posted my original message and found a mention of someone using distilled water the last week and draining the resevouir for the last two days of that. His logic was that the plant would use up all the rest of its resources after 5 days of flushing and two days of hanging out, I guess. I don't endorse or advocate anything grow-wise as I am not yet qualified to do so for the aerogarden. At the same time, I wanted to know if someone had found success with this method or any other bud cleansing method. The bottom line is, I bought all the possible fox farms nutes for hydro except the cleanser. I am anxious about this new method and want the best bouque of smoke possible, as I am sure many of you do as well. Also, I bought some Wet Betty wetting agent. I wanted to know if you guys used this or if there were any reccomended methodologies with this product. BTW the aero is still another day away:cuss: ...but i can wait...

The aerogarden works very well, but from my experience so far the only drawback is that it is not possible to grow with all 7 pods-you can try but there isn't enough room in the end. I've found the inner two in the back and the outer two in the front seem to get the best light. Now if anybody has seen my little post and i'm not being sarcastic when I say little, i mean i gotta update it, I am growing with the aerogarden with no extra lights or anything that didn't come with the aerogarden itself as an experiment to see what kind of potential it has- a control of sorts i guess. Anyhow, I cant wait until this harvest is done so I can start the real deal! I'm gonna go with 4 different strains of dank bud that I was able to get a seed or two with.
All you guys are doing great work, actually we should fuckin buy stock as much as we promote it!

Ok, the aerogarden came today and so did the fox farms and humboldt products I ordered. I set the deal up (smaller than i even thought) in my room, and put in some fresh paper towel sprouts in the grow cups with a gallon of distilled water in the resevouir. I did this to initiate my seedling into the groove of being constantly watered. I put it on salad greens since i know this has worked before for people. within a few hours, my little gang of sprouts grew their roots (or root, as it were) down into the sweet sweet water. so i decided to amp it up...of course. I researched a bit and decided my best bet for what i had was to put in about 0.75tsp./gallon of grow big hydro solution and 1.5tsp/gallon of big bloom, as per the hydro feeding schedule. Actually, it said 1tsp of grow big and 2 of big bloom but i thought that would be a poor choice at this point. tested the p.H. and like a stupid noob, realized i had bought a POOL p.H. tester that didn't go below 6.8....well, shit. So, I used my best color judgements I could muster and decided it was probably below 6.5 but above 5.8, which is good (the color scale on the pH kept getting light by degrees, so i just guesstimated). So, I'm giving my babies the spa treatment right now, please let me know if i have messed up something important or feel free to shoot some advice at me. lol
BTW if you buy liquid nutes SHAKE THEM THOUROUGHLY BEFORE EACH USE
I almonst didn't do this with my worm casting/guano nute (big bloom) and let me tell ya, it settles. probably because it is made from worms&shit
Thanks for all your help so far. these threads have been vital

Yeah, I realize how precarious the situation is for newborn plants but I know better than to just dump a crapload in there. I would do stuff like that when i was a little kid and thank god I learned then that more is not always better! If they burn, then i'll reduce it to a quarter of the reccomended dosage until they achieve a steady vegetative pace. thanks guys, i'll keep you posted

here are my remaining aerogarden ladies Grace, Deliahla, and Nickie the lobster queen (she's from boston)
all bagseed two sativa and one hybrid. i have been using the FF trio at 1/2 strength and there have been no burnings I follow the fox farms chart and cut it in half other than the open sesame.

i also have 2 clones working well on the left.

dude, that fucking rocks i could picture myself drawing something similar if i am left with just paint.....

As far as removing the battery backup goes, that did work for me, however, the pumps and everything all came on /off at one time. So that was not as good of a solution as my current one, which allows the light hood to be controlled seperately by a timer (and a long 6' cord, in case you need to raise it), while the base unit is plugged directly into the wall as normal.

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. All i have instaleld on my PC at the moment is Paint, lol...so here ya go!

A little run down of what i'm doing: Please help me if im doing something wrong.

Im using fox farm nutes at half strength. I germinated in a paper towel and when they sprouted i put them in the aero garden sponge thingy. I'm using Low ryder 2 seeds. I had a problem at first with my seeds not getting enough water because the pods only get the bottom half wet, so i pushed the sponge down so it was getting all of the sponge wet. Right now i got a couple sprouting from the sponge, only about half an inch. Any recommendations? By the way i was using 2 lights, i have extra aquirium lights that i was using to grow in soil before i got the aerogarden.

Anyways. Yeah. What should the PH be?

PH 5.8 -
usually no nutes for the first week or two (10 days after sprouted)....
w/ aerogarden sponges, you may have to help the tap root out... I like to rip the sponge almost in half vertically, so there is gap the tap root can get out.

After 4 weeks- move to flowering room.
