Another story that proves guns make people safer

Rittenhouse was attacked. The killers in the auburey case were the attackers. It's very simple.
The article pointed out that only recently would actions by Rittenhouse be considered self defense. Rittenhouse got off due to recently made laws and legal minutia. Clearly, you and I are drawing different conclusions from our ignorant but to us valid viewing of online information. Not very long ago, Rittenhouse would have been found guilty in exactly the same circumstance. It is the legal system that changed, not the circumstances. I don't know why that triggers you.

Triggered? I'm not the one hurling emotionally charged personal insults.

Gun culture is largely racist based and like the republicans or covid anti vaxxers and anti maskers, is just another price Americans pay for stupidity. Facts don't matter in America and these facts won't either, but are somehow acceptable to many Americans, this ain't freedom it's freedumb and being scared stupid. America has an 8 times higher gun homicide rate than Canada and we have a fairly high gun ownership rate.
"While personal safety tops the list of reasons why American gun owners say they own a firearm, 63% of US gun-related deaths are self-inflicted.
Over 23,000 Americans died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds in 2019. That number accounts for 44% of the gun suicides globally and dwarfs suicide totals in any other country in the world".

i find myself having a hard time caring how those weak enough to commit suicide decide to do it...what difference does it make if they shoot themselves, or overdose, or dive off a building? they didn't have what it takes to keep on living, how they decided to check out seems immaterial

Many people can recover from depression and MBCT (meditation) is the best known treatment for depression. Social media has caused an epidemic of depression among youth. Most people who get depressed are not write offs, they can get better, it's a social/emotional condition and for most temporary.

I admire your empathy. Myself, I'm so disgusted with US gun culture that I've completely lost my ability to empathize with them. I don't care what their problems are, I'm OK if they use their gun on their self. It makes everybody else safer.

then they'll recover, or not...still doesn't matter much to me whether they kill themselves with a chunk of lead, a bunch of pills, or gravity...i've had some pretty fucked up shit to deal with in my life, and never once considered killing myself over any of it. most of the suicides i hear any details about, doesn't seem like their problems are any worse than anyone else has to deal with...

I’m in no way an expert on suicide and have never got close to thinking that is the only way out, but have had some pretty shitty things happen in my 60 years, but again never bad enough to check out :(. I don’t think it’s the problems faced but the mental capacity and mental health to deal with the problems. Again no expert. My ex went through a huge state of depression after our spit (she wanted out) and I saw her, at 40, go from a vibrant, healthy, person to a shell of herself. It was the saddest thing, thank god she pulled through. Now she’s back to giving Satan evil lessons part-time lol.

What is the correlation between the gun culture and suicide?
About half of all suicides are by gun. Taking guns out of the hands of depressed people would do much to reduce it. The problem is, the only way that gun is taken is from their cold dead hands. I've lost my ability to care for them. People are safer when a gun owner dies.

All suicides
  • Number of deaths: 47,511
  • Deaths per 100,000 population: 14.5
  • Cause of death rank: 10

Firearm suicides
  • Number of deaths: 23,941
  • Deaths per 100,000 population: 7.3

i do not agree...if someone wants to kill themselves, they'll find a way. the bottle of pills in their aunties medicine cabinet, just closing the garage door while they sit in their idling vehicle, a razor blade in the warm tub....taking guns out of the picture entirely won't change a fucking thing, those who choose the cowards way out will still be cowards if you take away guns.

When a person is suicidal, time and difficulty both factor into their chances of survival. So, you are wrong when you say "if someone wants to kill themselves they will find a way". There are plenty of examples where people are alive today when they would not if a gun was within their reach at their moment of crisis.

I don't care one way or the other. I realize there are plenty of people who own guns that support stiffer gun regulations and my sweeping generalization sounds like I mean them when I say a good gun nut is a dead one. But I think you know what I mean.

As they say, hit dog hollers.

I do think fog is right in the fact that guns are way to convenient and with no meaningful checks it probably does contribute to the numbers that otherwise wouldn't go the extra mile, but as you say what difference does it make the method used. Would a person like fog show more empathy if it was an overdose?
