Worm casting DO NOT BURN haha! Not at all. I've read that you can grow in them alone lol..And that it wasn't ideal, but possible WITHOUT A DOUBT!
And I haven't burned anything using them yet! It had to be something else that burnt ya....Think about what you used and get back to me...Wasnt the worms tho!
They do help hold moisture tho, so you right about adding the perlite to help with drainage...The green sand also helps retain moisture while adding trace elements and minerals to the soil..Also it just improves the soil structure. All soil has some sand in it! Just trying to mock nature..
The green sand take FOREVER to break down tho...I'm talking a year or years haha so its mostly just a soil conditioner at this point...As it breaks down it provides a finite amount of K, but that wont be for another year haha or half one...

YOU ALSO REUSE YOUR SOIL OVER AND OVER AGAIN! So you don't gotta by anymore...You just amend it again ans let it sit after you use it.
So one day that green sand will be noticed!

Kelp Meal and Tomato Tone together for variety bro....The kelp meal also serves as food and a soil enrichment as it adds to the mineralization of the soil, as well trace elements. So it double as both...
MORE IT BETTER in terms of VARIETY....NOT QUANTITY...Put too much in the soil and you ruin it...

My first mix was just that lol my first mix, so I went light on everything to see how I'd do....
My second mix is mixed as it should be! I didn't go light on anything...I would copy the second one if I were you! I know it's gonna be a BEAST of a mix!

And as far as your lime....like it said I only added a little becuase I didn't know as much about soil and I read over and over again adding too much lime raise my PH....So I added just a bit...

Ppl are out there hating on Fox Farm Ocean Forest for whatever reason...saying it's ph is unstable and blablablaaaaa....
I test the PH of the bag I just bought at 6.5 outta the bag. That's WEED HEAVEN....Fuck are they going off on? Saying it's not organic and it's shit blablaba.....
My plants disagree haha!

But yeah that at lot of lime bro! 22 tbsps per bag! thats 66 teaspoons haha! Just seems like a lot!
Less is always better than more, becuase you can always add to ya know..

I'm gonan start a nice thread here soon and post everything I know there....hopefully it'll catch on and we can get some more learning done :joint:
Great, thanks for the awesome response man. I am going to study up heavy now, I think I have enough info to go off of to get things done.

I have a bunch of used mix just sitting in a bin waiting to be used for something. I hesitate to use it again because I used synthetic nutes first couple runs... but I do have a lot of extra soil just sitting around. Perhaps I should mix it up and let it sit? I was worried because of any nutes that might still be in it as well as ilttle bits of roots that are in there. (I shook the rootballs out vigorously, and sorted as much of it as I could but there are still little bits)

Okay, but yeah, I think I got a good idea of how to proceed now. :) I'm gonna read up on that literature you recommended then start buying some ingredients up tomorrow or monday.

Couple quick Q's:

1, I noticed that bone meal and blood meal are in LC's mix but not yours, (unless I missed it)--what do these provide, and what are you putting in in place of them to reach the same end?

and second... I definitely want to check out your second mix, but i am not sure exactly where it is? I haven't had time to dig through every page of your thread yet. Can you link me direct to the second mix, or post it up for me?

Blood and Bone are good bro, for N and P. It just comes down to preference like I told you. There's hella shit out there haha! I'm talking TOOO MUCH for me to know what it all is...These different amendments all serve the same purpose essentially...Its up to you how to pick and choose.
They're both good tho.
For the N I've got the Tomato Tone. That's got a good amount of P in it too.
And to keep that P up, I've got Indonesian Bat Guano which is high in P.
I'd use that if I were you haha(as I did)! A lot of ppl rave about bat guano. It's good for trace minerals too.

Mycorrhizae fungi you can also add...Those help free up P too!

You'll be straight I'm sure...Just take your time with it bro....

https://www.rollitup.org/organics/580027-fox-farm-ocean-forest-how.html#post8540094 <- I made this thread a while back and just kept it up. But the new mix is there bro :joint:

And as far as your other mix....I'd rinse it or flush it as much as you can........And then reamend it...It'll take some time but you can put life back into the soil with compost, ewcs, and some nutes and minerals...some perlite too

Sounds good man, much thanks. I will try to get it rinsed good when the spring rolls around and I have the means. Then maybe I can get it mixed up and let it sit, reuse it later in the season.

And thanks for the linkage... I will probably try to follow your recipe pretty closely. Sorry for asking so many questions that have no particular answer, lol. I'm just trying to get my head around what's good for what, basically. Probably should read that book you told me to DL, haha. I'll get into it tonight.

Ugh, pet problems... my cat's had to go to the vet like four times in the last week now... had a urinary blockage that they fixed, but then he got constipated from the pain killers... got him on laxatives yesterday and now he still hasn't pooped and he's got blood in his urine... dang, stressful as hell... we live kinda rural so it's 45 minutes out to a vet that's open at night. GF's running him over there again right now. I'm stressed out! I hate seeing animals suffer.

be careful with this type of situation, make the vets DO THIER JOBS. ive seen many an animal die this way pay attention to any new symptoms as they can lead to UI.

the first place to start with is the cats diet, time for a new food. soft food would not be a bad idea. did they take xrays to be sure the cat did not eat something it could not digest correctly like a large rat and the bones are not decaying as they should?

Yeah, we're trying hard to get him fixed up... he is on urinary control food, and then we switched to the canned version when he got constipated, so that's covered. I am going to call and recommend x-ray right now, good call.

He doesn't eat animals, he's an indoor cat and he's never eaten any animals... but he does eat elastics and string sometimes if we're not careful, so it's still a good idea. Trying to get ahold of my gf now to tell her to get them to do xray...

I'm sorry to hear that man. Losing pets is so hard.

Shit like that makes me angry. I've had a lot of problems with doctors first hand so I am pretty paranoid about misdiagnosis and shit. My other cat kept hissing at him and now I can't help but wonder if she was detecting something beyond just him smelling funny from being at the vet. At first we figured she just didn't like the vet smell, but she hasn't stopped for the whole two days he's been home, we've had to separate them to keep them from scrapping... now I can't help wonder if she was trying to tell us somethin.

Alright Sincerely, I just ordered in all the ingredients I'll need via amazon... lil expensive but the best I can do mid-winter. I'll restock locally in larger amounts when the weather's right for that kind of shopping, if everything goes well with this.

Gotta say, thanks for encouraging me to take the leap on this.. I have been looking at soil mixes from day 1 but it seemed overwhelming, and I think I wasted a lot of money on other fertilizers, heh. Maybe I can resell them on craigslist or ebay... not sure about selling partials on ebay tho.

I've got an incubator tub I built for shroomies a way back... I'm thinking I will mix in that tub and then use the incubator feature to heat my mix to encourage ageing faster indoors. I usually incubate at 80, which is great for psilocybin mycellium, so I figure it'd be good for the myco I'm adding in this case too. Sound good?

Sounds marvelous brother.
The soil will literally rise I. Temperature as all the amendments you add begin to be worker on by the microbes...that's why you might see that you should let your soil "cook" or cycle for a month or at least 3 weeks. And like you suggest, the temps will def keep help with that..just mix it and water and turn it once a week for a month...that what I do and it works for me.

In a couple weeks ill start watering my soil with teas to help add to the life in my soil.

But the good things about these organic ferts bro...they'll last u a few grows, and you make your own nutes with that you have!
So the money comes back on time haha..like with any investment! If this mix is what I think it is, we should be able to compete with hydro results, as they'll have constant supply off ALL THEY WANT and need!

And Craigslist haha you can sell ANYTHING there..the shipping on eBay might be steep given the weight of some of the bags and bottles.

But that lady InTheGarden inspired ,e to take the leap bro, so I'm glad I could inspire you haha! In time you gotta pay it forward! I'm sure you will haha. But I'm here to helped and be helped bro! To learn and let learn!

Working together we'll ALL get shit done more efficienly ya know?! You got it tho. Just make sure you take your time when adding stuff. Too much of anything is never good'

Yeah man, most def, I will be extra careful measuring and combining. Last mix I did stoned off my ass and months later was wondering if I ever added the lime, LOL. I hate that sort of uncertainty. I'll make sure to do it with a clear head this time.

Water and turn once a week, check!

i fucked my very very first mix up and tossed it about 8 months ago lol..I started with miracle grow and just put shit in it haha without really paying attention to detail...

im talkin 1 month veg with dead new growth coming in haha 'twas the noob ness of not learning and just doing
...so I know if u mix a bad soil haha your gonna pay dearly!

So what soil mix did you go with altar?
Well I haven't mixed yet but I ordered the stuffs for and plan to follow Sincerely's latter mixture... this recipe:

-1.5cubic feet Fox Farm Ocean Forest
-38cups Wiggle Worms Earthworm Casting (1-0-0)
-10cups Perlite(may add more eventually)
-11tsp Rooters Mycorrhizae
*Soil Base
__________________________
-1.5cups Indonesian Hi-P Bat Guano (.5-13-.2)
-1.5cups Algamin Kelp Meal (1-0-2)
-1.5cups Espoma Tomato Tone (3-4-6)
*Nutritional Amendments
__________________________
-1.5cups Azomite(used as a rock dust)
-0.5cup Espoma Green sand
-1.25cups Hi-Cal Lime
*Mineral Amendments

Doubled all measurements since I already have 3 cu.ft of soil mixed up, so:

2X:

-3 cu ft. of base mix (already has lime in it)
+76 cups of worm castings (4.75 gal)
+20 cups perlite
+22 tsp Rooters Mycorrhizae (.45 cup)
--
+3 Cups Indonesian Hi-P Bat Guano [.5-13-.2]
+3 Cups Algamin Kelp Meal [1-0-2]
+3 Cups Espoma Tomato Tone (3-4-6)
--
+3 Cups Azomite (rock dust)
+1 Cup Espoma Green Sand

...only going to let it cook for a couple weeks and try my chances then, I think. That way my babies don't get too old waiting for the soil to be ready. I'll probably transplant out of the solo cups into something intermediary with a plain soilless mix in the mean time too, just to make sure they don't bind up in those cups.

Then, hopefully I can get them transplanted into their new homes bout two weeks or so before flipping to 12/12.

Also will start more right behind this batch for the C99 seeds comin', hopefully. I might need to go buy more worm castings before that's possible, but I'll do that locally as the hydro store nearby does carry those. (But they don't have fuck all for other soil-based foods, boo)
