In theory if a plant is triched out could thrips get through essential oils to actually damage/eat buds? In experience do thrips prefer buds over leaves or buds at all?

I had a thrip problem. The only way I could get rid of them was a Hot Shot No Pest Strip. I would put it in the tent during lights out, turn the fan down low, and let it sit for 5-6 hours. I did that every night, every other night for 7-10 days to cover the entire lifecycle. Haven't seen one since.
I put the strip in a zip-lock freezer bag to keep it if I need to use it again. It's really toxic, I wouldn't over use it. Some people might not use it at all. But, I got tired of trying to control them with "nice" stuff. Next time, I won't wait so long. On first sight, I'll go nuclear again.

Did you try spinosad? Works every single time for me when I get them back. Couple sprays, a week apart usually does the trick. It's organic also

Yes. It kept their populations down, but I could never get rid of them that way. It may have worked better if I started controlling them when I first noticed them in veg. By flower I was nervous about spraying the plants too much.
Whenever I get them again, I'll try spinosad sooner. (But, I don't have any trouble using the nuclear option every other day for 7-10 days.).

Just an FYI, I'm one of those guys who has no problem with the nuclear options, if done rite
But yeah spinosad works brotha. Even for pretty bad infestations. Of course it's better to not go there, but I have lazily gone there a couple times lol.
Actually my buddy from Cali who lives up in Payson now, called me a couple months or so ago, and had never had such a bad thrip infestation up to that point. Spinosad came to the rescue. Spinosad works, and is pretty safe to use whenever.
Maybe try spraying a few times, Spraying every 5 days or so, next time? Because once you have flyers, they are a little harder to beat.
