not telling everything and lying are two very different things imvho.. no need to tell them some stuff if they're not asking, like april said, sometimes you don't really want to know some stuff, but if they do indeed ask, tell them the truth ime..
I think it's called discretion. It's not lying. I know if I asked I'd get the truth. I just don't feel like asking because precisely like April said, I don't want, nor do I need, the details, nor does he want mine. It's really a dance you work out over time. You develop a shorthand and an understanding of the other person.

Fine, fine. Busy, mostly. My plans to get more active aren't going exactly as planned, but even though I'm not getting out as much as I thought I would I have become more social, got back in touch with an old friend and got instantly adopted into his family so I have a bunch of friends now. Well, I consider it a bunch, it's actually 8 people. More than I'm used to, for sure!
