First Grow: Are My Girls Looking, Okay?

Hey Chief, when you say to drown your plant for 7-10days, do you mean that is AFTER they look to be ready for harvest...or do you figure that 7-10days while they're drowning into the time where you THINK they will be ready to harvest (like 'I think they will be good in another week, so start the drowning now')? Am I making sense? LOL...I'm a little 'chemically inconvenienced' at the moment.
 
Quick update on the girls...

AK48 is now at 6 1/2 weeks flower and getting some decent weight to her colas. I don't think she will give 2ozs like the first grow, but she might be close if I can fatten her up some more in the next 2 weeks before harvest. She's sucking out the N and dropping leaves pretty fast, so I think she might be ready earlier than the first grow was. You can just see the buds from her top (Fat Ass) trying to barge into the picture from the right...

Short Rider is also at 6 1/2 weeks and although she is much smaller than the AKs, she's budding nicely. The heavy leaf fill on this strain makes it harder to see all the buds, but they're packing on weight under all that greenery...

Here is the AK48 cloned top - known affectionately as Fat Ass - 2 1/2weeks into flower. She's loaded with small buds, as you can see from her closeup...hogs the camera and she's spreading out so much that you can't get her all in one pic! I sure hope she fills in like her mother...

Hey Manditroy, when you are ready to harvest your plants then you can drown them for 7-10 days. When your plants appear to stop drinking water from the bucket you put them in to drown them, wait another day to be sure then chop that baby. Your plants will drink a shit load of water daily. I had to top off the water level daily for the first 5 days.

Chief - Once I put them into drowning mode, will they continue to mature and get more amber trichs, or just fatten up on buds? I'm trying to figure out how much difference the time used to drown her will make in the THC levels...will she head more towards a 'couch lock' high, etc? I'm not opposed to a bit of a body buzz from it, but I have friends that liked the high from the first grow, and that was more of a head high that creeped up on you. Any ideas...?

The key is to try to keep them alive under lights while drowning....yes they will continue to mature. Drown them when you feel they should be chopped then depending on the plant it can take 4-7 days after you start drowning. Just take 4-7 days in account for chopping purposes. How many days did you flower your previous plant to get that head high that creeped? If it was 70 days then start drowning your plant at 65 days....Hoped that made sense.

Thanks BKB! That makes sense just fine - and was exactly what I needed to clear up. I took the first grow of AKs in stages...8, 9 and 10weeks(for the popcorn buds). It was good at both the 8 and 9 weeks, so I will split the difference probably. I've just finished the 7th week on Friday, so I will keep her another week before I start your super duper drowning process. That should put her around 9 weeks if she holds on good. I've been watering with distilled water for my grows - do I need to drown with that, or can I use just plain tap water that has sat for a day or two? I've been thinking of trying to switch to tap water anyway, since paying a buck a gallon is probably a waste of money that I don't need to make. I can use water that has been thru the filter on the fridge, then let it sit to evap the chlorine...that should be safe enough, right?

Do you suggest trimming lower branches etc? its my first females, not sure what to do

Looking good! Trimming all depends on what kind of space you have for the amount of plants you're growing, and if there is enough light to get to the whole plant. I don't like to mess with things too much, but I know some prefer to trim the lower branches to force the growing efforts into the main cola and largest bud sites. If this is your first grow it would be a plan to let them be, then you'd learn what the plant does under normal circumstances. Next time, you could tweak things and experiment more...but it's all up to you cause you're the gardener! Did you put them into 12/12, or are they autoflowers? The first photo is showing obvious female preflowers, which will happen when the plant is sexually mature, even if you have not changed your lights yet. If you have not switched to 12/12, you can still let them grow until they reach the height you prefer. Just be sure that you move them into flower by the time they reach the half way point in your height limits - you don't want to run out of space, and they can double or more...

You can drown with plain tap water right out of your sink whenever you are ready to submerge her. I would recomend on feedin her nutes till about 3 days prior to starting to drown her too. Trust me your bud will be fully cured and no sign of nutes will be in your smoke. Just prior to doing it, shoot me a PM if you have any questions, seriously no question is dumb and if I dont know the answer I will def get someone in to answer it.

My 2 cents on trimming: Dont do it, Mother Nature doesnt trim her bush cause she is a "Natural Woman" Especially fan leaves, I tried it and its not going to double your yield if you do so. If a leaf is dying all you have to do is give it a tiny tug and if it comes off then fine, if not, leave it alone. Some strains are very good canidates for lolipopping but I try to be Father Nature with my girls and let them do their THANG!

Thanks BKB - I was thinking I should be stopping with the nutes on the next watering, but since my AK has had issues with fading leaves for a while now, its good to know I can continue with them. It lost a lot of leaves, so I've been trying to keep the N up a bit more than it was getting with just the bloom nutes. I just need to weight her pot down so she stays with her soil below the water level, right?

Yeah, i use bricks and rocks. just make sure you soak them and wash them before using them. How big of container are you growing your plant in? Just try to find something that is close to the size of your growing container. Example, I use a 1 gallon growing pot and I drowned it in a 2 1/2 gallon bucket. I would recommend that the day you drown your plant you flush 3 times the amount your container size is with water that is pH'd to 5.8. Dont forget, while you are drowning her, she will still be in your flowering area on 12/12 and all you got to do is top her off so the water is never below her soil level. I hope this is making sense....

Do you think the molasses makes much of a difference? I've been using it on a regular basis when I feed - almost every time since very early on. How much did you use per gallon of water when you did the drowning?
 
I would drown with plain water 1st. If you drown with molasses your place will stink up very badly. Its a wicked nasty smell too! I would say the Molasses helped with curing the bud faster and better. Read up on that thread I posted. It should answer any questions you have about the drowning...interesting stuff.

I read your thread on the drowning with molasses... It sounds like it was a bit better than with just plain water, huh? I don't really mind the smell of molasses, but what do you think about maybe changing to either just clear water - or a fresh bucket of the molasses water - after a few days. That would cut back on the stink from the water in the bucket as it ferments, and the plant would still be getting its feed on with the fresh stuff. What do you think BKB?

I am all about trying different things out, I am going to let you know right now, if you use Molasses the smell becomes very sharp and nasty smelling. It will smell your whole grow area and room possibly. Go for it bro, try a different way, regardless the smoke will be cured as soon as its dried, watch!

I'm gonna think it over...I have another week to decide before I start, but I will at least give her molasses when she has a feed again. Maybe I will do a mix for the first couple days of drowning, then dump that out and go with plain water for the rest. That should give it a good shot right when she starts to suck up the water, and then avoid the worst of the smell from the molasses when its getting old enough to ferment. -Mandi
