It'll make it to national news and we'll hear what the police say happened. What really happened might be a whole different matter.

Got this from a Mass. blog. WW

A hunter mistook a 66-year-old Norton woman walking her two dogs for a deer and shot her at 4:55 p.m., 17 minutes after sunset yesterday in Norton, a preliminary investigation indicated, police said.
The hunter, also a Norton resident, immediately called 911 to report the shooting, Norton police said. Fire, police and rescue personnel responded.
“Norton fire personnel extracted the woman from the wooded area and transported her to Rhode Island Hospital,” a police statement said late last night. A hospital spokeswoman refused to discuss the victim’s condition.
The hunting accident occurred off Oak Street and remains under investigation by Det. James Franco, along with state and environmental police.
The deer hunting season for blackpowder muzzle-loading guns ended yesterday at 5:08 p.m., 30 minutes after sunset, according Catherine Williams, a spokesman with the Massachusetts Environmental Police. Williams would not discuss what weapon was involved or what time the woman was shot.

Sunset was 4:22 PM in Norton last night which means that legal hunting hours ended at 4:32 PM (SS +30). How the hell could he have seen to identify his target. It must have been pitch black at that time. Especially when you consider the fog and cloud cover. There is no excuse for this.

This seems to be one of the worst years for hunting accidents I can remember in a long time.

He should be forced to give all the blood transfusions the woman he shot needs. And then parted out for organs.

this was on the local news. there weren't a whole lot of details. according to her husband she got a shattered hip but it missed the bowel and kidney.

it's a neighborhood with a woods behind it and it was a designated hunting area. the neighbors frequently hear gunshots but the actual hunting area is set further into the woods.

i find it hilarious that he mistook tails of golden retrievers for deer and the police aren't concerned that they let him carry on the job.

i find it interesting that there was no mention of whether the woman was wearing the bright orange "don't shoot me" gear that one would normally wear in a hunting area.

and i think it's bullshit that they won't release his name. average citizens don't have to be charged with anything for their names to be plastered on the news.

There are sooooo to many jokes to be made about this .

I can't figure out which one to make..

A cop, who protects people.. with a gun, shoots something before he can identify it... while hunting deer?

Hunting after dark and faces no charges! As a woman that liked to walk my dog, Bob, I would feel safe to walk near a woods or threw a woods at dark since no hunting is supposed to be allowed. Even if she was wearing orange how would he see it.

Mark Twain once said all cats are gray in the dark.

NORTON, Mass.—The husband of a grandmother who was accidentally shot in southeast Massachusetts by an off-duty state trooper stalking deer after dark is questioning the hunter's target identification.

The Boston Herald reports ( http://bit.ly/u0GOol) that James Blair, husband of Cheryl Blair, said John Bergeron apologized. However, Blair, also a hunter, said hunters need to pay attention and know their target.

Cheryl Blair was walking her two dogs Saturday when Bergeron mistook her pets for a deer.

She is in the trauma intensive-care unit of Rhode Island Hospital recovering from surgery for a fractured pelvis.

State police spokesman David Procopio says the investigation continues but that authorities say the shooting was accidental and Bergeron, a neighbor of the Blairs, was properly licensed and faces no criminal charges.

Bergeron did not respond to a request by the newspaper for comment.

So he hunting after dark seemingly illegally, he shot a woman, and the only reason for taking the shot was because he saw a dogs tail. Wow. I don't know what kind of manner i'd be reacting in if i was one of his neighbours. He certainly wouldn't be waking up with a smile on his face.

I think he'll be moving - soon. So if you're a state trooper in Mass you get a free pass, no different than Michigan.

yeah, thought of that too, also wondered, what the fuck was she doing "taking a walk with her dogs" in an Designated hunting area.

lucky woman though, getting only her hip shattered.

still think the man should get a spanking for this, way too eager on the trigger.
