If you're really worried about it, freeze the bone first. The freezing really helps break up the bone cells and prevents it from making shards when they chew it. Believe it or not the old dog Lab mix would go through that bone in about the same amount of time. While Hazel's head and mouf look like a pit's, Missy's got the jaws and teefs to back her shit up. (And now she's not seeing so well, so if you hand-feed her, be careful! Hazel's gotten really good at being extremely gentle taking food.)

I've worked with every dog I own on food and toy issues FIRST. I own it, not them. Each and every time. This is how I trained my mother's Rottie, and my kids were able to do some truly test-ful things to that dog (they could literally pull his pud, and he'd just lick the hell out of their faces to make them quit). Anyone, man, woman, or child, can walk up to either dog and remove food directly from their mouths. Now, there's another vicious breed that should be kept muzzled at all times, too, huh?

I find it's always the "safe" choices in dogs that are more aggressive/territorial when it comes to food/toys. I know that's not always the case but in the situations i've been in. But I also find that people tend to work on correcting behavior in more "dangerous" breeds. I've known people who own smaller dogs and once they display unruly behavior it's cute. Heck even at the dog park when a smaller dog becomes aggressive with a larger dog everyone laughs. Moose is a good guy thus far. He does have a paw issue that im trying to correct. He wont bite but he will try to remove your hand with his mouth. you get what im saying?

LOL.. One year I gave Jack a big bone from a Prime Rib.... he chewed on that thing all day as it still had lots of meat on it. I meant to take it away once it got picked clean... but I didn't get there quick enough and sure enough... he ate part of the bone he had bitten off. Apparently there was a sharp edge where he'd bitten it in half and the next day when he was out back trying to poop it out the sharp edge was giving him some trouble coming out. He would squat & push... then yelp... hop a few feet and try again. I think it took him a good 20 minutes to get that thing out. It was both sad and hysterically funny at the same time. I wish I had video taped it.

LoooooooooL! AH MAN. Moose did the same thing except in my car. I would have laughed except I was too busy cleaning out boney shit.

Beautiful pit! I had gotten a pit a few months before I was pregnant and once I had my son she slept with him every night and during naps. I co-slept with my son. People use to rag about me letting a pit sleep with my son. Well, dammit, you walk up to her and see what happened. She protected him, always stayed near. When I had to move I let her go stay with my high school ex's mom and her kids. She climbed the fence one day and some asshole swerved to hit her. You could tell he done it on purpose. One of the sweetest dogs I ever had and he had to do that. She was semi-racist. She liked our black neighbor but that was it. She had a good judgement in people though. There were a few people she wouldn't let in the house that I'm thankful for. People that I didn't want there.

Missy HATES her feet being touched, which makes trimming her nails all but impossible (and she needs lots of trimming since she's usually pretending to be a log). I've been working on that for ten years now.

But, you're right about the small dogs, I see it all the time. It's not cute in a big dog as far as I'm concerned and neither is it cute with a little dog. The only dog that's ever bitten me was a Chihuahua (two of them). Once I didn't watch my fingers when giving Missy a piece of meat and she snapped it up and nipped my knuckle, but like I said, her vision's going, I'm sure she's going deaf, too.

That's what Im hoping for. That type of relationship. Where he views him/her as our offspring and that they should be protected at all times unless it's someone that is close to us. I would have been in trouble if moose was racist. Although it probably would have been kinda funny. We do think that his previous owner was a black guy, just based on how much quickly he took to me than to my wife. He was always cool with her it's just painfully obvious he's a daddy's boy. As far as that fucker hitting her...that's just plain evil. It's so surprising how much people hate them. Not dislike them, or apprehensive. Just unbridled hatred towards them. It's really sick, and they should all be michael vicked.

Jack does the same thing. He doesn't like it when I grab his tail and he always tries to remove my hand with his mouth. NO BITE PRESSURE at all... just tries to move my hand gently with his mouth. All I have to do is say NO and give him the stink-eye.... he stops immediately and gives me the sad eyes that seem to say... 'ok mom... but please let go of my tail'.

I don't grab his tail to be mean... but I have to get a hold of it to brush the sand and dirt out of it. He just doesn't like people handling his tail... he's never mean or aggressive about it.

Purdy Jo (the pit I had) loved to go riding. One day she got out of the yard and we didn't know it. She jumped in the neighbor's car and wouldn't get out. He was leaving to take his wife to work at the time. Purdy was happy she got to go bye-bye! lol She was the 3rd pit I had. My first we had for 1/2 day. We put him in the pen overnight on the first night since my ex's mom didn't know we brought him home and I'll be damned if someone jacked him! The 2nd, Ooie, one wasn't a city dog. She needed freedom to run so a friend took her to live out in the country. My fourth, Takoda, was a pit/boxer mix and she needed room to run so an older couple took her here to live on there farm. She now helps with rounding up the cows. As you can tell I have been through plenty of dogs.I refuse to let dogs go to shelters (especially if they have pit in them) so I keep them until I can find a forever home for them. I can't foster pits like I would like since my son is only 5. Once he's older I'll get into it. At the moment I have a 12 year old Rottwieler (Zeus) and a 3 year old pit (Sasha Phat).

Yeah last year sucked. I was hoping it would have been like 07' when it was absolutley gorgeous out. Ahh man...Im trying to get as many RIUers together. Last year we tried to link up, but due to the weather people either didn't show or didn't feel like searching in the rain.

Right. I say no, but I don't give him the stink eye unless i'm really annoyed.
My wife always tells me I yell at him, but im just trying to be stern. Maybe I'll throw the stink eye in there just to let him know daddy's not having it.

He's not very big. He's only 42lbs and maybe 16 inches at the shoulder. I can't imagine him getting much larger. Oh and those bones are no match for him. he killed it in 3 hours.

You have any pics of your pup?

Wow, my puppy is only 3 months old, and he's 30 pounds. he's BIG and strong already and i see alot of the personality in him, i knew he was mixed, his mom was yellow lab/golden retriever and they think his dad had pit bull in him.
DAMN lol. that would be fun to watch actually.

he definately looks lab, but those pictures were more then a month ago. he's a lot bigger and not as skinny, extremely muscle-y lol but he's cute =)

He's too cute. Especially those eyes. He must get whatever he wants with them. Fun to watch him and moose go at it? Moose is friendly but he doesn't take nice to males who are around his size. They try to hump him, and there's none of that. He's not down with that gay shit. lol
