wow, getting a lot more looks on the log - well, there is finally something worth looking at, so that sounds about right- thnx for everyone for suggestions and comments
ripening is happening - just slower than i thought - a few cloudy trics have shown up i think
clear trics can masquerade as cloudy though - really need to view trics from the side to get a true picture
and i do see a few colored ones - call 'em amber for lack of better description - i'm a bit concerned i'm going to have dark trics in large numbers - i really don't want coma weed

my own description of couch lock - most of my tasting is from my sativa days
had to try nl#5 for my 1st indoor grow - just want something i can stay awake on - for a few hours anyways
i've looked at some smoke reports for nl#5 - strongly suspect the genetics of what i've got are similar to the BC nl#5 - and it can be a bit knock out from what i've read

Nice Bush. Looks really good. I especially like it when plants start getting all yellowish, red and purple in late flowering
Those buds look pretty deadly too. Is this your only plant? I forget just what your setup is like.

Day 61 of 12/12. Getting a little sentimental about my lady after all this time. Let's just say i'll think of her every time i light up.
I've calmed down on tric checking every day, was getting a little obsessed. This could be the last in tube pic of the uncut main cola. Tomorrow tric check and out of tube pix. If i see much cloudiness, i think i'll have to cut that day during the dark cycle.
Double checked on other harvests of nl#5 on highgrade's grow site. The best example of nl#5 harvest seemed to happen a bit sooner than mine. They used HPS, but didn't do any tric checking that i could see. Anyhow their smoke report spoke of mighty potent buzz from uncured bud.
It's the one smoke report of BC's nl#5 that got me a bit wary of too potent bud. That report described a 'white knuckle hold on to the futon' type of buzz. That might be little more than i was bargaining for.

You should get a 1/2 easy off that.
Something I've noticed about harvest time ( in my over a dozen harvests now) is that I really like the HIGH of a slightly early (no amber) bud, but the high doesn't last very long if its too early. With that weed I usually get up to do somthing before I finish smoking the bowl lol. But too much amber and you know exactly why they call it couchlock. So I like to mixx it up a little, but mostly at about 5-10% amber she done for me.

that captures the problem exactly - i hate weed whose buzz doesn't last very long
on the other hand - i'm not really looking for a hammer between the eyes
i know there is a sweet spot - trying to hit it exactly is going to be tough

Here's what I saw today. Still mostly clear, though cloudy beginning to come on. Maybe 10% cloudy, tough to judge. But there are some amber, though they aren't really amber. Dark clear red is what they look like to me. And they're not on top of the bud. Kind of back from the outer pistil area. Well, I'm going to take the risk these ambers, of which are very few, are not the key indicator of maturity. I don't want the couch, but I really want potent, mature bud. So pics as usual.

i'm using 3 26w cfl's - currently 2700k - used 5500k for veg
i think the principle should work just as well for any light source - the only caution is my guess is that lumens go a long ways in a tube - this plant is getting about 4400 per square foot based on initial lumens which seems to be how most growers here measure cfl's

Day 64 of 12/12. There are times when you think the journey will never end. I thought had seen some cloudy trics in my prior posts. Guess not, sure not seeing them now, or very few. Shouldn't be taking this long for nl#5. However, some good sources name thai sativa being a part of the genetics. Maybe this pheno has a bit of the thai's time to ripen.
Better pic, got up a bit closer with camera. The tric picture is pretty wild. Looks like a shiny, glassy surface. It's 'tric city' in there.

been using plain water for last 2 weeks - no 'heavy flush' where 3 x soil volume is used - so call it a 'low flush'
i think my harvest is upon me - just scoped out the trics - finally seeing ambers - not dark amber - very clear amber
still lot of clear though which is not ideal - but i think if i let it go any further my 1st puff will put me to sleep for a week

Day 66 of 12/12, 10 days beyond the breeder's guidelines. And still a lot of clear trics.
I estimate maybe 25% cloudy, at most. But there are ambers showing up, clear ambers not dark. Less than 1% have the amber color. But I feel I can go no further in ripening and have any chance of getting a good head from this bud. So I plan to cut later tonight, just the main cola though.

I'd wait bro. It's a little eary at only 25% cloudy. And that's not nearly enough amber to put you in a coma, so don't be so worried about the dreaded couchlock. lol.
I think your still at the stage where the high is good but not lasting. i would not put much stock in the breeders time estimate. they are always saying that its a faster flowering time than what it actually is. They know how impatient we all are lol.

thanks many times over for the feedback - i admit the amber probably scares me a bit too much
sounds like solid advice - i'll hold back for a couple more days - see how things look then
