i worked at a gas station for a couple years.
they are right.
i seen people:
let 8 year olds pump gas (gas everywhere lol!)
deliberately disable the auto cutoff and walk away while they pump 70 gallons onto the ground
smoking while filling milk jugs with gasoline
2 liter soda bottles used as gas cans
tweakers using a rotary power grinding wheel to cut open their pickup's bed and the top of the gas tank to get to the fuel gauge sending unit and lifter pump...
washing their hands in the nozzle flow like it's a garden hose
spray gasoline on their friend's pants like they pissed themselves, just for puerile laughs. (but it WAS totally fuunny...)
drive away with the nozzle still stuck in their fill neck. pure genius.
drive away with $60 in change waiting at the register... lucky im honest and can remember license plate numbers.
leave their credit card in the pump
leave the pump running on their credit card account (huh? it's 3 am and nobody's here but i got a pump active? ohh yeah dumbasses...)
when gas stations go fully automated, expect disasters regularly.
fully half the population is made up of people of below average intelligence.

one time, many moons ago, i left the gas cap on top of the pump on my way from arizona to oregon. had to go about 10 miles to the next exit before i could even turn around and get the damn gas cap.
i never mind letting someone pump my gas. i hear they used to also check your tires, check under the hood, and clean your windshield back in the day. i'd have no problem with that coming back.

the 2 liter soda bottle is an emergency gas can. That is the second choice for a milk jug. You usually pick these up in someones trash while walking to the gas station from your car.
Because there is no way I am going to pay 10 bucks for a 3 dollar plastic gas can they sell at the station
