How did people in the 60s and 70s grow weed?

I was looking through a vintage high times december 1977 I believe and it had the top 40 buds of 1977 and they weren't pretty compared to a newer issue. What methods were used? Did you just find a few bag seeds plant em in dirt and grow under the sun? I'm just curious as to how that plant came to be cuz now any old newbie can grow A++ top shelf stuff.
I grew up in the surfer culture of 50's to 70's cali. Why would you grow something so plentiful and cheap? You paid maybe $10 for a lid and you could easily get a pound for $99.00 Key prices were unbelievably low. So why would you want to grow 20 foot sativa monsters at your house?

My friends and I tended to save the seeds and pitch them in the authority figures gardens. Back then if they caught you doing pot you went to VN if you were male. Oh god knows what would happen if you were female! oh my. There were lines you simply did not want to cross LOL.

A lot of good sending them to Vietnam did, everybody smoked weed in Vietnam.....I smoked some temple balls & thai-stixs in Nam that I'm still trying to match......weed was everywhere in Vietnam....so was heroin....pot was mostly sativa back in the 60-70. Most indica's were made in hashish.......ah the good old days.......

My brother in law sent some Vietnamese Black home, and it was very potent compared to everything domestic. Back in th'70s there was a lot of seeded Colombian, Panama Red, Gold, and lots of seeded brick weed. $10 to $35 an oz, $80 to $120lb. Lots of decent hash, Lebanese blond, Choka Red, afghan, Nepalese. But the best were the Thai sticks, if I remember correctly they were about $120oz. Then came the Sensimilla craze. Most people didn't even know what it was, I was an avid High Times reader so I was a little more up on the new stuff, I actually have the first 10 issues. After the sensimilla came out everything took off and we starting seeing a huge variety of different types of buds, sticks and hash. Very once in while I will run across some buds that remind me of old days. Although its very true today's buds are more potent there was definitely some quality bud back in the '70s, it was just harder to find. It depended a lot on who you knew. Ahh reminiscing, those were the days, the ones I can still remember anyway.

Most people didn't know what it was??? Over 20 native countries did. Sin semilla means without seed, that's all. Lol

At the time most people only saw seeded cannabis, when "sensimilla" came around in abundance, it was something new to them. And yes I do know what sensimilla means, ha ha. I noticed you are in Spain, things are and were different here in the states.

Si si, estoy aquí!! Age has nothing to do with being bi-lingual!! I find it hard to believe that they weren't smoking females (sinsemilla) before the 70's though!!

I didn't say people weren't smoking sens in the 70s, am saying "a lot" of people didn't start seeing until the 70s. And I totally agree about some of the strains coming from Hawaii, they were very potent. I remember Puna Buda, Hash Plant, Kona Gold, Electric Ganja, and of course Maui Wowi. I had several friends and family going back and forth to Hawaii and Cali bringing back all kinds of different strains. Puna Buda was one of the highest rated strains when it first came out.

We were aware of sensimilla, but why bother? It was nice when we got it. Pot was so cheap just use more! It was easier to titrate that way too. It's what you are used to I suppose, LOL.

The pot is nice today but I remember some Michoacan from '76 that was better than anything since or before! Plus having someone have a seed go off was so funny! Ahh the good ole days....

Ahh the spears of Michoacon were tasty, about $20oz. The first time I saw them was at a concert at Winterland, San Francico. Loved that place!
