how milky does it get, when to harvest

I am on day 46 of flowering 12/12

in some lighting the trichromes look milky and in others they look clear.

any guess as to how long till this plant is ready?

be prepared to wait a bit longer, there is no set answer, depends on strain
most new harvesters will say they wished that had waited longer before cutting

Patience, patience.... is a much required tool at this point. Knowledge of various things have gotten you to this point, try to use the same to determine harvest timing.
My fav scope to gather info is a simple jewelers loop, prob 30x. Know your strain and any tendancies it may have, know the type of buzz you want.....etc, etc.... takes a little practice to see the diff in clear to milky but the amber will definitely show up. Also check those fine hairs to see what they're doing...I like to see mine browning and shrinking back into the bud.....
I personally harvest when trics are milky w/20-30%amber as I prefer some "UP" more than couchlock. It's all up to you but you'll only find your happy medium with patience ....Have fun ........:joint:

harvesting is up to the strain and grower.if I have a strain that is a indica hybrid and it finishes in 8weeks.I wait a lil after 8 weeks and then I harvest all cloudy with a lil amber.strain comes 1st then the grower.

when you say 20-30% amber, you mean 30% of the trics are amber and the other 70% are cloudy?

also i have heard that it is BS that harvest times effect "up vs couch", do you disagree?

I am interested in both couch locking and upping effects. if i had to choose i would go with couch locking.

I read somewhere on this site that i can harvest the main cola and let the smaller "popcorn buds" sit another week or two anyone have experience with this?

i got clones from a friend that said its an 8 week flower, what are the down/up sides to waiting an extra week?

couchlock is up to the strain 1st but if you harvest sum ckear most cloudy and a few amber you will, get you results.but if u can't wait.cut a peice off for a sample.

sounds like alot of contradictory information... Subcool has a thread on here about this exact subject on here... It's called "https://www.rollitup.org/subcools-old-school-organics/66405-amber-alert.html"

definitely sounds like he knows his shit... I try not to take too much stuff that I read on here 100% without doing my own research... But for some reason, my gut tells me to JUST TRUST.

rereading your post, and based on the number of days you've flowered, it sounds like more clear than cloudy, clear trics can appear cloudy depending on the lighting and the angle they are being viewed from
and you my not get just milky/amber at the end, i have a northern lights that ripens quite slowly
quite a few clear even after 12 weeks of flower, with plenty of milky/amber
if you reveg and clone the same plant a few times, you will learn a lot about the length of time of flower and the effect

What happens if you wait too long to harvest it by a week or so?
at some point, you will be getting a lesser quality product
what i've seen mentioned is there is usually a 2 week window
at one end you get a racier effect, the other more relaxed
i haven't done enough harvests yet to give the best answer, but if you're checking your trichomes regular and watching the plants overall appearance, you'll likely do well
the plant should look mature, fan leaves should be losing some color, it will look 'ripe'
that said, i'm sure there are strains/phenos that won't behave like most others, they will have quirks

I am using a 20x loupe with built in light, i can see the trics but they are quite small. is 20x enough to properly judge the state of the trics?

20x works fine, it's what i use
it gives a larger field of view, but i'm still able to see individual trics
some like the bigger magnifications, i think radio shack has one that goes to 40x(?) or so
