Does "protecting a free state" mean protecting the Government or the people? Are we talking collective state rights, or citizen's rights? The rest of the amendment suggests that it is for individuals.
Also n. b. that as you are choosing to look at only the weapons of the time, the semantics of the time are germane. "Well-regulated" in modern English means "capable of hitting where they aim", and "militia" was defined as the entire able-bodied male population of citizens between the ages of 15 and 60. Nowadays that's been bumped up by changes in society to eighteen.
If you read the Federalist Papers, you'll find that "keeping King George off our backs" was an immediate reason, but the larger one was to prevent a homegrown tyranny. Nothing like an armed populace to keep Gov't honest, and that is why I deeply distrust arguments that there is a destructiveness cap on the possessible weapons the Second was written to protect. Cui bono? It has happened before that the intent to make a government takeover easier was sold as an interest in public safety, with gun ownership privileges the hinge of it. cn

times have changed and especially the weaponry. there is no conceivable way to compete with what the government has anymore.
and if some bunch of buddies that like to play guns in the woods does want to overthrow homegrown tyranny, they're not going to bother to do it in a constitutional fashion, they'll contract tanks and planes from some eastern bloc shit hole.

The way is conceivable and has been field-tested. Both superpowers have been in Afghanistan, which hardly looks like the sort of place that could resist either of them, and it resisted both. Viet Nam and Iraq #2 come to mind as well. cn

The only delusional wild fantasy is thinking that the U.S. goverment would destroy its money makers (us), as long as tax dollars are flowing the government will never take up arms against civilians. I mean really, the government using isolated drone strikes and full military might against its people, this sounds all like a delusional fantasy to me. Paranoya from your neighbors gun collection?
