I dated a girl in high school that worked at a burger joint. I swear the grease soaked into her skin, could smell it after a shower for half a day.

Sometimes yes... especially in customer service roles when you're supposed to be warm and welcoming...
You can be tired and still put on a proper display when you reach a customers table without much effort, all it takes is a little effort and pride in your job. We all fuck up, we all have off days, but we should all expect that when we decide to let our emotions or tiredness get to us that there are consequences for those actions. A waitress who drops the ball for whatever reason loses out on a tip. Gee, i bet next time she'll learn to bottle it up for an hour longer and let it out when she's off the clock.
It takes like 2 muscles to smile, no excuse why a person can't do that for the 30 seconds they are at a table. Go frown in the kitchen if you want to be a sad panda at work.

Coming from Europe it's interesting to see the different attitudes on tipping. I kind of hoped for someone to post the scene fro Res-Dogs as well (great scene). Here in The Lowlands tipping is not something that is seen as essential, but that's because the service in general is shite, lol. You can walk into a store in Amsterdam, stand for a few minutes while no one serves you, then get some arrogant assistant who looks at you like, wtf are you doing in my shop?
As someone who use to get up at 4:30 in the morning to deliver milk to peoples door steps I understand the whole tip vibe (we also collected the money in the evenings). I didn't expect a lot of tips, but I worked for around 60p an hour so was always very happy when someone told me to keep the change. The best tips always came from the Working class areas. We delivered to a lot of rich middle class houses as well and they were the worst tippers of all.
I do however lean towards sandy's way of thinking. Tips should be earned.

I know all about the service industry as I put a couple years in at a gas station while going to college. And now I own a tint shop, so again still providing a service. I am not dealing with 25 dollar a plate meals, I'm cracking these folks over 300 bucks to tint their cars, I don't care how tired I am I'm going to kiss their ass til they drop off their car. When they walk out, then I'll vent if I need to, but 300 bucks for something I can do in less than 90mins, yeah I'm not fucking that up, ever.

I've done front of house hospitality work and it's not hard to smile, be polite, friendly and get orders correct... even when you've been standing all day and all you can think about is how sore the bottoms of your feet are...

I used to go out with a lady that was a waitress at a strip bar up here in Canada and she would make $400 cash in tips on a Friday night.

Not in my state...min. wage is around $8 an hour, people that wait tables at Coney Island or Bar and Grills live on tips, they don't get the $8 an hour, it's more like $3...trust me,I have 4 daughters and an ol'lady who've all worked at these places.And tips are never recorded unless they're split with the busboy.....$30 or $300 in tips, uncle sam doesn't know shit
