SIGH!!!!! this is F-ing rediculous I buy so much stuff (lights, fans, cabs soil ETC) and I still cant get my plants to grow correctly..

Ok heres the problem. I live on the 4th floor and no central air. There is an a.c but its in the room wayyyy across from the grow cab so basically its not doin a thing to help me out.
I planted 12 seeds into starter plugs in a covered dome with ONE 26W cfl about 3-5" away from top of dome, in a homebox XS with an exhaust fan (6" inductor fan) one small 4" shop fan pointed at bulb to keep it from overheating and one 7" honeywell fan on low placed on the bottom of cab to move the cool...err whats suppose to be the cool fresh air around..
and they are growing very slow already.

basically lets put it this way my house is hot as HELL!!!! the cab gets around 80F at night and around 90F:spew: daytime there is no way I can install an a.c unit in this room and there is no way I can install a can fan or a blower. this cabinet is suppose to be my veggie cab my flower cab is in another room with a 250Whps and 4" canfan with passive intake and a 6"inducto fan on the very top side of the cabinet... basically Im not to worry about that cabbie but my vegg cab is the one giving me problems.
I have grown in this room but lets just say it took about 5 months to get a plant about 2ft tall and very weak looking with very few nodes so basically I can grow but it will take up all of my resources and I will have no progress just a stem with fan leaves to have a decor. pointless!!
please dont post comments like "get an a.c or just give up" because I really want to grow I still havent grown (successfully) and I really want to because I am just using cheap seads (i.e ak-48, N.L, Blue Mistyc, Afgaan) for now as practice because the seeds were practically free.

Im looking for help, eather tell me what I can do other than the obvious (air condition) or if you guys know some weird strain out there that will grow well in high temps and moderate humid (25-40 humidity) also the seedlings I have in the cabbie now are about 5 days old and there about 2inches tall with first leaves on them. I will post pix. I know I always say I will n never do but I will 2morrow when lights go back on... well thanks alot for reading I know I wrote a book but hey..

Thanks.

If you're in soil it's only normal for growth to be slow. Just be patient and mist with plain pH'ed water daily. I've been having a heat wave for a month already. Average temps for me are 94 to 107 in my cab. But I mist daily and feed them well. You can check out pics in signature. Just mist and you'll be okay. Sorry I couldn't be of more help but I was afraid to mention another AC because you might hit me... LoL j/k

Use the fans to suck air from the bulb out of the grow area. It sounds like you have it the opposite, which will push the air over the bulb and onto your plant area - exactly the opposite of what you want.

CFL's still produce heat...best bet for that is flouro's...plants can reach and touch the tubes without burning them.

Would not worry about that heat to much, I mean SA is not exactly cool and these plants have been reported to grow there with some success. Couple things I have tried when growing another substance is, fill a bucket with ice and place it in the grow container. (Insulate the container best you can, just as building an insulated box or wrapping the area in blankets). Other way was a deep freeze modified to not freeze but those are large and probably not practical for someone who does not already have one or someone who lives on the 4th floor of anything.

Issue with the ice method is you can get temperatures to dramatically drop to a point that is to low, and then they quickly rise.

thanks for the replies. well one I am not in soil Im in starter plugs. 2 yes I am in soil and using one 26 Watt cfl and I have no way to suck air from the light because I dont have a glass on my reflector. I mean I can install one but I dont know where to get one that size :( this is the reflector I have with 2x light sockets... heh dont ask how I did it. I have my ghetto methods :D.

what i mean is do you have the fans blowing at the light, or away from the light?

I agree with Cee.....you are probably creating a small convection oven effect if you have the fan blowing at the bulb....easy fix....big mistake

Why not buy a portable air conditioner or a chiller? The portable ac just needs a vent hose run out the window "surely you have a window somewhere"and the chiller needs nothing just water.

Go to wal mart , they have a lil cooler tyope fan ya add ice to a tray and it cools things off .... just empty ice tray and refill nd so on Good Luck

Hi mate! If you are serious about this than you should go to the 'grow space build' section and do some reading. The problems you are having can all be solved with efficient venting. So, read some, then make a diagram of all your components and post it here before you build it, and we will gladly help you dial it in mate!

Good luck,
Unity

BTW, I would start over (not the plants, but the room), too many times I see temporary solutions being offered that end up costing us more then if we had done it right from the get go ;)

I would rather him use a window unit, cheaper ($200 to get and about $20 to run), plus it does not exhaust air from the grow space which in turn means that you are one step closer to efficient co2 injection (at one point ;)

He said he has an ac of some sort already in the room, just thought if he got a portable he could get closer maybe vent the cool air into his cabinet somehow...I don't know I would have to see what he has going on.:joint:

Assuming it's <85F in the room, he should have no problem getting temps reasonable with the amount of fanpower he has. I think it is just a matter of reworking his fan design. 1x26W CFL is nothing ...

OMG im high,I though he had 26cfl's not 1,26W,cfl lol!

thanks for the replies...

and yes I do have a small fan pointed at the light bulb (its a temp untill the seedlings get bigger then I use a 125W clf untill flower)
I use this fan because the light bulb.. even thou its a cfl it does produce heat in that confined area. again I forgot about the damn pix. I need to remind myself to take pix tomorrow.

Also I have already started over because the last cabinet I had was a shop cab that my fail plants outgrew, so I dont think I will be starting again because Im pretty sure my problem can be easily fixed with a permanent drop down of about 10-15degrees how I plan on doing this dont even ask cuz if I knew it would have been done.
*sigh why dont I grow in winter time*

I do not have an A.C in the room its down the hallway in another room.
I was thinking about getting a portable A.C because I thought they were cheaper and more efficient is this true?
I spray the leaves just about everyday and water just about everyother day unless of course theres a shitty heat wave and the temps reach 88+ :(
I open the closet at least once a day for at least 2hrs to air out and get fresh co2 in there.

will try desperatly to post pix tomorrow if I remember, sorry :(

Thanks alot for the input guys.

for the last time: pointing a fan at the bulb isn't doing anything good. heat goes up. if you blow air over the bulb, it's going to push it down at your plant. point the fan away from the bulb.

i'm out.
