Indoor CFL grow journal of someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

Ok, so heres my deal: I have no idea what I'm doing. Right now I have one sprout going in a jar under 3 CFLs, I have a seed in a can next to it, but it's been awhile and I'm not sure if it's going to sprout or not, and I have 5 seeds sitting in some paper towel that I'm hoping will crack. The extent of my equiptment right now is a spider lamp and 3 CFL bulbs. I don't know what I'm doing.

I'm taking this from the standpoint of, it's a weed, how hard can this be? (I've already done enough reading through this website to know how stupid of a statement that is)

I'm starting the journal for a few reasons, I know there are people out there in my position, hopefully this will help you. Second, I think it'd be really helpful to keep a grow journal to help me keep track of everything. And third, I was hoping a few of you would be nice enough to tell me that I'm being an idiot from time to time and tell me how to keep my girls alive.




Before I go smoke a bowl and then call it a night, here's a summary of things so far:

I have one plant (esmeralda), she sprouted about 2 weeks ago. I don't know exactly when, I'm estimating 2/15/08. She stands about 3 inches tall. I'll be posting some pics tomorrow once I figure out how. She is currently sitting on a shelf in my closet under 3 CFLs. Next to her is a can that has a seed that cracked, but doesn't seem to want to sprout. And then on the table in front of me is a plate that has a folded over piece of wet paper towel with 5 seeds that have been in there about 20 minutes.

That's it for right now, I'm going to try to post reguarly. I welcome and appreciate anyone who wants to post advice, suggestions, and/or encouragement.

thanks, I just finished reading through someone's complete journal a few hours ago, I was wondering what I was going to be reading next. I'll start on it tomorrow.

I'm not sure exactly how this works exactly. I've never uploaded a pic here before, so this will be a test. If it goes well, there will be more.

Well, that wasn't exactly what I wanted to happen. I'm going to do some investigating, once I figure out how to do it the way that I want, I'll upload the rest of them. In the mean time, that is a pic taken on 2/19 of the seed that crack, but still has yet to sprout.

I finished my homework earlier than I thought I would so I have some time to post some pix before I leave for class. These are all from 2/19. At this point I primarily had them just sitting on a widow sill and then at night I would put them under 1 30watt CFL. The first one is the one i posted earlier, its the cracked seed that still has yet to break through the soil. The other 2 are pics of Esmerelda. I can't remember exactly when she sprouted, I'm guessing that's about 4 days worth of growth in that pix. Anyone think otherwise?

Ok, so here's some shots from the second set of pics I took. These were taken on 2/24, still doing the window sill thing.

I don't have enough time right now but when I get back home later tonight I will go and take pics to show you esmerelda now (4 days since the last pics) and the current set up I'm using.

In the mean time...questions? comments? criticisms? Anyone?

oh honey something I just thought of is that you need some type of drain holes in the jar and the can....Esmeralda looks like you could replant her in a couple of days into a suitable pot with drainage holes...if you do like a 10-12 inch pot it can be her permenant home...pm w/any questions!!

I was thinking about drainage the other day. The tin can should be easy enough for my drill. The only thing I'm somewhat aprehensive about is esmerelda, she's in a glass jar. I'm not sure how drilling holes into glass will go. Worst case I'll just have to do an emergency transplant. I was actually planning a trip to lowes today to get some stuff I need to fix my sink, I'll have to stop off in the garden center and look for a new home for Esmerelda.

Esmerelda will have to be transplanted asap.

Transplanting her out of that jar (where the lip is smaller than the jar itself) will be disastrous when she's really NEEDS to be transplanted.

Drainage holes are a must- some experienced people can do it, but it's real tricky.

Yea, I realized not too long after she sprouted that that jar might not have been the best place for her. Is there anything special that needs to be done when I transplant her or do I just dig her up and put her in her new home?

Dont dig...make sure the soil is a little moist not wet put your hand over the jar so that she comes up between two of you fingers and then lightly shake or tap the bottm and let what slide out slide out but be GENTLE!!

So the answer to the question of "how to transplant" is...carefully.

I'm going to be picking up some more soil and a new pot tonight. Anyone have any recomendations on what brand soil to buy or things to look for?
