My concern is what they are selling to me and what they are telling me. Cree will only confirm it is real or not. If it is, then nothing of it. If it is not, then something could happen. And at that pont is what should happen. And would think if they fake then you would want to know that. But I have never said they are conterfieit. Just that it is a possibility(straight for crees mouth). Read every post again...you guys just take tid bits of what you want to use.

Thanks for your effort and please keep us posted on what they tell you.
While the COBs from KB might very well be 100% legit, I consider advertising themselves as an authorized distributor to be a deceitful practice.

Doesn't everything start out that way? He got COBs from KB that didn't seem the same as ones he'd gotten in the past so he contacted Cree about it and they let him know that KB isn't an authorized distributor. Then he posted his findings here.

I once bought a new 3w from a golf expo show because it was $30 cheaper than the same club at the local Golfsmith. Great deal until the head came off the shaft and I had no recourse I could take because I bought it from an unauthorized person. Turns out mine was a counterfeit. Good times. That $30 saved was a whole lot more money because I now had to go buy a new club anyway.

Not saying his are counterfeit by any stretch, but it is possible if he's not authorized.

It seems like genes had something worry him, and I was surprised by lighters issue as well considering he was told to toss the cob's he was sent that were supposed to be legit Cree's.

Best of luck to everyone, I'll stick with my "ridiculously priced" authorized dealers though.

Can the COBs from KB and Digikey/Mouser be each tested for performance, in order to establish or denounce credibility? Does anyone here have the resources and tools in order to conduct such a study?

Would it make you feel better if you called or emailed cree about kingbrite. I'll delete all my post so you can be the bearer of bad news. Would that make it ok and less selfish.

You really are bugging out on the counterfeit possibility. I didn't intend to claim that you thought or knew they were counterfeit but merely included it as a general possibility. I don't want you feeling unintended discomfort, GG. The way I see it, you were just proposing it, through the words of Cree officials, as an idea, which isn't taboo.

I have not bugged at all. Only you have. I only repeated what I was told. By the company everyone wants to use. They don't want to use kingbrite...they want to use cree.
You have called me into question with no validity to you spurts what so ever. You supply nothing to to your claims. You also don't use cree at all. You don't show anything you do to support you decisions or thoughts. You only like to get into tisks with me. All fine and good...but you really should bring something valuable to the table eventually. Cause this reoccurring retreating you do must be getting old.

IMO, it's all about information and people can make their own decisions from that point forward.

After getting burned once by a knockoff item I prefer to stick with authorized vendors and will continue to do so. Others may be fine getting their parts from other sources, but at least they have the information to make that decision for themselves.

What's there to retreat from, GG, lol? You do make good points about my stance in this ordeal (not having any experience with Cree products) but I stated those points a few pages back.. just read all my posts, not just the ones I tagged/quoted you in.

I'm obviously picking on you for stupid shit, as I was bored/procrastinating at the time of my posts. Please don't take my comments on this thread seriously.

One big issue is that if its true KB is not an authorized reseller, Cree's warranty will not be honored. In order for a warranty to stay in tack, the item must be purchased from an authorized reseller. I am not discrediting KB as there are many legit products sold even in the USA by USA based companies who are not authorized resellers, but there is also a risk involved.

Brilliant point indeed and if a company who incorporates these unauthorized COBS into their products (@Greengenes707, are you cooking/building for profit?) doesn't have warrantied parts, they are surely bound to deal with the repercussions of possible, future ordeals.

I don't have a dog in this fight except I have been reading and considering a cree cob build. I can tell you after reading this thread I'm not entirely comfortable using Kingbrite(ght). I think I will use the others that are listed and authorized. I mean why not? It seems that I wont save any real money using KB. So I am glad this info came to light.

From the first post about kingbrite, I got the sense of being sold something. Whether he is a part of the company or just getting kickbacks, no thanks. Similar to old posts I've read from a certain member regarding BML lights..

I make cheese sandwiches from the drippings.( I gave kingbrite over $750 and haven't received anything yet, but I have faith that they will pull through for me. Until then it's cheese sandwiches.)

What bothers me is someone buying that many is probably building for resale. I would hate to buy something that will not be stood behind.
