Need help making fan more quiet. Any advice?

Hi all,

I have a 660 cfm exhaust fan that is extremely loud. Does anyone know of anyway to quiet this, or any easy way to make a fan box to muffle the sound without effecting air flow?

I know this info comes from another site but it is the best DIY air muffler I have seen

Also depending on what type of exhaust fan is you can get a dimmer switch or provide lower voltage to slow it down a bit, but that all depends on what ype of fan it is

Thanks for the reply. That seems like a good idea and very inexpensive too..

Any one else have any other great ideas?

i put mine in a carboard box with 2 holes cut through it for ducting. I put pillows inside too. its as quiet as it ever will be.

I have an ambient temp of about 90 every day while it runs, and it runs for 18 hours every day. It draws air from 2 aircooled 600 watt hps in a 4x4 foot room with a temp of 85. The fan engine is in the center of an inline fan, Id imagine its the coolest thing in the picture. I also use nice feather pillows so if it overheats it can go up in flames for a nice show. Nothing so far though.............. there are warm to the touch but my just enough to make my cat like them.

I have tape across the fan to keep my furry friend from trying to crawl in it or something. if I taped it all tight it would be more silent I think. I am lazy though. I had a carbon scrubber on this side but my room temps were too high so I took it off and got a ozone generator for the stank n its better so I left the scrubber off. Its more silent then when I built a wooden box suspended from the ceiling. its a 454 cfm I think. I wrapped my ducting with blankets n stuff also to insulate it. n also to hide that IR heat print.

Vibrations can carry through walls. I imagine the pillow job would work well enough for this, but another good way to reduce vibrations from carrying is to suspend the fan with bungee chords, those cloth covered rubber chords with hooks at both ends. Even those 12v PC fans run significantly quieter when suspended.
