NooB Advice

Infinite,

If you aren't planning to veg above 12" the 400w should be fine, but you may need to rotate your plants under it to keep the ones on the edge from growing more sideways then upwards. I'm vegging 6 opium clones under a 400w and I had some issues with the outer plants leaning inward or just flat growing sideways until I started rotating them every other day.

Here's some pics that are only a few days old-the plants are at 4 weeks veg and should have been switched to flower the next day, but I had to wait for my new 600w to arrive so they got an extra week (should start 12/12 tomorrow). Notice the lean on picture #5 caused by being on the outer edge of the light for too long(sorry about the pic posting sideways) and the stunted/sideways growth on the central plant in pic #4 caused by the same thing.

super skunk eh? I'll admit that (being a total noob) I am not familiar with more then its name. Guessing that it smells like shit and gets you HIGH but what about background, sative/indica percentage, flower time and general hight (tho that part is easily changeable)?

Thanks guys!
Super Skunk is one of the few strains that are a whole lot like the animal its named after if you can believe it truthfully its not a very aromatic plant until its molested after it has been *resting for a while* .. its one of the few heavy sativa/indaca strains that if you molest the plant it releases a very strong *skunk piss* aroma. its what they call a medium sativa/indaca blend .. to me that always means about a 50/50 breeding background .. and when cured properly it has a heavy grape aftertaste when smoked ... It's an extremely powerful strain that has been known to compete with hash's potency. As a plant, Super Skunk usually grows low, slow and small perfect for outdoor or greenhouse cultivation but, also known for its extremely strong aroma when molested, it's common for Super Skunk to be grown indoors with plenty of maintained odor control. and brother i mean heavy odor control .. you piss this skunk off and it will let you know its not liking the treatment in a big way so you have to pick your pruning and transplanting days carefully otherwise everyone will know you have it. 8 small plants on transplanting day made me air out my house for over 2 hours :)
being a budget gardener like i am tho if your looking for a better strain for a nice heavy happy buzz Super Skunk is it .. and if you like to make hash with your cast off plant matter you will be pleasantly surprised also .. its been my plant of choice for almost 2 years now and before that it was Skunk No.1 which was used to breed Super Skunk. to me you just cant beat it for its bug/mold resistance and being a plant you can experiment and abuse and it just keeps bouncing back for more :) it does have a very long grow cycle but can be hurried up under a ton of HPS*example 1000 watts per 3ft square* but its better to just let it run its 8 week cycle in flowering .. trust me the super high thc is worth waiting on .. outdoors you will get about 500 grams per plant but indoors i have had yields as high as 400 grams so its a nicely producing plant.

Thanks for all the info guys, grey I will definitly keep an eye on the sideways growth. If i put up some CFLs over the outer plants do you think that would help?

Norml, thanks for the description. gotta say though that much stank sounds like a bit much. I was hoping that my grow room wouldn't have to be air tight from the rest of the house, and with that strain sounds like it really would need it. I can make it smell tight, but it will cost me $ and time, both of which are a little short. What about Northern Lights, anybody know? I heard it recommended for new growers and it has a shorter flower time (6-7 weeks I was told). However, it is completely possible that I am talking out my ass here and that this is total BS.

If you saw the plant I just harvested, it was a Northern Lights Special, went 10 weeks, but had no odor at all (which was one reason I choose it)
was easy to grow and the high is incredible

as a general rule Northern Lights is a good noob strain to start with!

Aside from helpin folks here at RIU, I also help several new growers in real life.

one of them came to me today with camera in hand and said are these boys or girls?

they were both girls :bigjoint:

Since I taught him how to get there, I figure I'm thier Grandpa

and they are doing so well

just thought I'd share

Well, that sounds promising. Does NL tend to be tall? because vertical space is a big concern.

points for the fast response too!
mine could have gone 3 feet, but I topped her and she settled in at 21 inches, (how I trained her) you can control how tall plants get several ways it's really not a problem if you plan, I used topping and LST but there are several ways

glad you help any way you can, plus rep for you dude! good medical growers are the best. I have a OMMP grower friend who is gonna give me some of his lights, a MH 400 and the 1000w HPS. He is also gonna help me build the grow room if this ever happens.

Infinite,

Supplementary side lighting will help, but they will still tend to grow towards the most powerful light source. If your only doing 6-8 plants rotating them every couple days is easy and only takes a minute, so it's not like it's a tough fix.

As for smell, if it's a concern strains like skunk aren't such a good idea. I'm growing 6 "opium" in a 10 x 12 bedroom and just open the window a crack for ventilation while running a fan and so far there hasn't been any smell issue outside the room(I keep the door closed and it's on my second floor), though when you walk into the room you can definately smell them. Opening the window further would fix the problem, but the weather isn't being cooperative right now.

Riddle,

Has your harvest dried enough for you to get an accurate estimate of what your yield for the plant was yet? I've heard good things about northern lights, but I have to get a yield of at least 3 oz per plant on a 12-14 wk grow (starting from 3-4" clones) if I want to avoid paying dispensary prices. :)
I apologize if you already mentioned it, but I must have missed it.

I have put em in jars now and have wieghed em they are startin the cure :bigjoint:

the 92.4 grams wet is now 35.9 grams (almost dry) works out to .37 grams per watt

Plus the lower buds are still going, have grown another 1/4 to 1/2 inch since sunday

Your plants look as though you could easily get what your wantin from them, just keep em healthy I think your gonna do well

Infinite,

Try the 1000w and see how you like it, but you might want to compare it to a 600w sometime and see if the difference in performance is worth the difference in cost. My caregiver swore by 1000w lights until his son loaned him a set of 600w to play with, and since then he's changed his tune. I've done some research on it, and apparently the 600w is the most efficient type of HID lighting you can get currently, so it ends up putting out more light per watt then the 1000w. Don't get me wrong, the 1000w still ends up with a higher total output, but it ends up costing you more watts worth of power per lumen and costs more then a 600w to buy, so the results may not be worth the higher cost for a small grower.

you could very well be right that the 600w may be cheaper to buy and run, but I can get the 1000w for free, and free outways over time electricity costs for a while. I will keep what you said in mind for the future though, maybe grow umber 2,or 3 or.....

on another note, can you guys tell me how the activity meter thing works? I really don't get it. The reps seem more straight forward in that someone is awesome and then they get points for being awesome. clear, easy, but what is the activity thing? percent activity of what?

When I was runing the class/game part of this thread my green bar (activity) went to 100% and I'd say 1000 of my post happened during that time.

Now you can see that it is much smaller and I'm still here every day, just not postin as much :bigjoint:

.37 grams per watt isn't bad at all for a first grow. I know that 1 gram per watt is supposed to be the gold standard, but how many people actually reach that, especially growing in soil? With my 600w I'll end up with 5.35 oz per plant if I can manage to pull .25 gram per watt, so I'm not worried about hitting the gold standard. As it is I'm going to end up having to stagger the harvest to avoid going over the 2 oz possession limits.

im thinking about harvesting this min they all got bananas now and i found 1 bud at the middle base on a bubba half covered in mildew i musta missed it before and let it grow iv cut it and everything around it and trashed it they all seem to be growing a few seeds my room must be covered with pollen i was planing on going another week+ but my 3 bubbas are all red hairs except a few new growth spots with all cloudy some amber trichs the 91chem has lots of green red pink white hairs but its mostly cloudy and amber they are nine weeks into flower do you think i should just keep any eye out for mildew the humidity has been pretty consistent low 40s with tons of airflow
i want to wait just worried that all bud production has stopped with seeds forming and bananas growing with a chance of mildew coming back i really want amber trichs but would rather have something then nothing the lights have been on for 2 hours now should i get the axe or just keep on trucking?
it should keep on ripening with seeds growing im pretty sure just not sure if it will fully ripen with seeds and naners growing if thoes things can cause it to take much longer id think it would be better to chop tonight or right before lights on in the next few days

man that sux to hear you got cross dressers .. the one that had the mold on it id take it down right away .. mold has spores and can be as tricky to get rid of as pollen so id chop it and don't be surprised when you cure it if you loose it to the same mold ... keep it separate ... i wouldn't chop the rest until you see ALL bud production stop all together .. i have smoked some pretty killer Hermie weed before so don't be sad you might be surprised :)

the seeds are green and can take 3-6 weeks+ and would have the slow growth of the chemD and long flower time and high hermie rate also with the small bud of the bubba i doubt it would be stable and even then most likely long wait for small nuggs but the cross grown right would probably pretty intense i just cant find anything out about wether or not the seeds and nana production will prolong the ripening faze and how much longer if any will take to ripen during this process time is important this grow isnt much and i really want to clean it and start my next grow with all that iv learned here and on this crop if it doesnt slow ripening i want to keep on flowering
thinking about just cutting the one that had the mildew outbreak that would give the rest more room and get the only one with a outbreak atm outa there but if i can find out that the seed and nana production will make it take alot longer they are better off being chopped

hey I tried cutting clones today.......I did not use a root hormone, BUT, I found this small bagg of almost powder like soil that said it was for "rooting cuts".. I cut the top2 sprouts( they were 3 nodes and counting) at a sharp angle, pre wet and holed the soil stuff, tucked them in nice and firm, and put them about 5 inches from the light. Within in an hour they are laying flat across the pot(like they have no life in them)............IS this normal or did I fail...do i need to keep it WET to keep up the stem strength? WHAT?

they always droop out when you first cut them then a couple hours later they spring back...that powdered soil may already have hormone in it also just keep it damp(not wet) and cross your fingers :) oh side note it also helps to keep the humidity up with them the first week of rooting ...mist them down about 3 or 4 times a day (no roots so got to get water somewhere to survive) and if you cant do that put them in a small cardboard box with the top open and spray the inside of the box it will release the water almost time release fashion .. its ghetto i know but its a old trick i learned from a grower on how to keep humidity right :)
