Normal Sativa Stretch???

Crossed the 3' mark without much in the way of new nodes. The nights have been 10 degrees below normal for mid-May. We should be mid to high 50s at night. Last night was 45 degrees. That's what's causing the stretching.

I'm going to top again as soon as a couple new nodes develop. Unfortunately, the nodes are already staggered. I'm not sure topping will do much good.
Staggered nodes just means it's mature enough to start flowering.

It's over! Yanked them today. Learned an important lesson...Don't start too early in the year. The 45 degree nights and 65 degree days really caused unacceptable stretch, with very week branches. A 15 mph wind yesterday snapped the top branch.

The replacements were germinated outdoors, in full sun, in FFOF. The nights finally warmed up and they look great. I won't be fighting 8' plants topped, super cropped, and pulled down from a plethora of support poles and nets for 5 months. I'll take 5' bushes any day.

If you're worried about theft, put up cameras and/or trail cams. Make it very obvious what you're doing and make sure they see you, and place one very obviously in the yard somewhere. Even put a sign. Then make some comment like 'i can see an ant fart with this thing!'. And then just smile and wave. They'll get the point. It took me catching my neighbour trying to steal my pkgs on my cam, i printed it out and gave it to her mom. Said next time it's going to the cops and I'm not fucking around. ONE CHANCE. She got the point real quick when she seen that picture of her clear as day. She left us alone after that.

Too bad you chopped them, you could have just trimmed it down to one small branch and let it regrow with a huge root system

I'm ok with it. I never liked the look of them after leaving the cabinet. Several branches had 14" of stem before the first node. The growth at the top was lush and getting too heavy for the branches already. Lesson learned.

First six weeks under high intensity LEDs in a controlled 65 low to 75 high environment. The suddenly, they're in 45 degree nights and overcast 65 degree days. I didn't know it was the perfect conditions for a bad stretch.

Genetics with og in can be stretchy with big internodes. Cutting down and starting again with the same genetics just means you could end up with a similar type again. Some stretch 3 times wen in flower. Probably beter to get more squat, small internode strains that grow short and outwards rather than upright and tall as much.

That's a scary thought, but so much later in the year this round will prevent the 8 footers. I had two different strains in that grow and both exhibited the same stretchy behavior. Topicana Cookies is 70% sativa dominant, but GG4 is a 50/50 and both plants stretched the same.

Another mistake I made was waiting to long to top. I'll top these at the 3rd node, and top the two highest offshoots again when they get three nodes. With a mid-May start, and two toppings. I'll be fine.

Yes those og kush based types can stretch and have some big internode space. Its best to get heavy yielding bushy short strains. Using cuttings are good aswell as they wont grow as pole like as seeds. Also once you get a few nodes you can start pulling out the very top new growth. And you can keep doing this on all the upper growth as it will redistribute the growth hormones an start encouraging the branching and shoots from lower down to grow out and try to reach the top again. It slows down upwards growth and pushes sidewards outwards growth. Then once the lower down branches reach the top just pull the very top growth out of them. You can continue doing this over a long veg season and the plant will get bushier and bushier and you can end up with a 3ft tall plant thats 4-5ft wide.pinch-fiming-sm.jpg
Just keep pulling out all the top growth all over the plant like this.

Sorry to hear you yanked them.
I feel kind of bad because I believe I replied to one of your threads saying your plants would be fine. They were looking good, but starting early will give you large plants and all that comes with them.
Good luck with your new starts.
