does somebody wanna give me a summary of these last 21 pages?
To quote a wise man:

"The petition is for how trolls and those that respond to them are dealt with, punishment wise. Did you read the whole thread? (I don't blame you if you didn't) but it's to alter the rule so that long time members that do joke around by giving people shit aren't banned while the "troll" or "flamer" is allowed to continue doing what they do. All of us that sign this and/or that have been posting have seen that it isn't an attempt to make it okay to insult people, we are just trying to revise where "insult" and, well, I guess "defense" (for lack of a better word) differ and can be handled differently as well. "

Like I said, make it so a person needs 200 rep points before they can give others a negative.... if someone has that much time to create an account and gain 200 rep points to frag someone, they are going to be abusive in other ways long before they reach 200 points. I do not believe that the ability to give NEG rep to be given to any new account. It should be earned. That way, the community can help police it's own.
serapis, we are living proof that people can have opposing opinions and choose to respect those respective opinions without having to insult, ignore, curse out or neg rep each other.
but then, (i think) we're both mature adults capable of that level of discourse so that point is moot in this case i think.

now, if i for instance think little enough of someone to neg rep them, i'm just going to do it the once that i can. and, because i was raised to believe that anonymous attacks are the exclusive trademark of cowards, i'm gonna sign my name. (if i'm feeling particularly ruminative i might leave a one-liner explanation)
except if i'm dealing with some motherless troll with a dozen accounts, you can believe ALL of those accounts are gonna be neg-repping me in return. WITHOUT signing.

how is that supposed to make riu a MORE relaxing place to hang out?

Just to go with that too, in a thread a couple weeks ago (about the kid wanting to grow in his mom's house) I had a flamer try bashing me by telling me I do nothing for marijuana legalization and that I am just a punk kid. I responded to him by calmly telling him how I am involved in NORML here, have voted and tried raising more awareness. I did not bash him or even curse back at him but rather just explained to him how I am involved and then asked him how he was involved in the movement...havent heard anything from him since. A lot of trolls just want the reaction out of people, which is why I respond in a more civil way rather than bashing them, just gives more fuel for the fire.

That's just how I go about it though, I just want to see the trolls monitored and dealt with in a better way so we don't lost more valuable and long time members.
I realize you're baiting me, but it's not very smart bringing that thread up...I knew you would sooner or later though.

That would be the one where you were giving advice to a minor on how to commit a crime in their parents home.

Here's what I said:
What are you doing to support mj legalization?..... nothing? It's stupidity like you and the op are demonstrating that that adds fire to the govt's cause and takes it away from ours. Wise up, dummy.

Nowhere did I say you did nothing to support mj legalization. I asked what was (at least in my head at the time) a rhetorical question.
Nowhere did I call you a punk. I called you a dummy..... big difference.

I didn't respond until now because it's not wise to post personal information regarding organizations a person may be involved with on a public forum where illegal drugs are discussed.
But obviously you don't understand that.

Farther along on the thread you say: 'RIU should be about helping fellow stoners, not bashing them or giving them advice that could get them busted.'
Even though you do it in a polite way, you constantly bash people.
You also give advice that has the potential to get someone arrested.
One would call that a 'Polite Troll' and a hypocrite.

The funniest thing is you were being trolled the whole time and never realized it until you just read this sentence.

Yeah, yeah, I know it........ I was trolled too.

They would have to work those accounts up to 200 positive rep points before they could give a single negative rep. when they reach 201 positive points, they can give out a second negative rep, etc... it doesn't have a lot of room for abuse. At least i don't see how it does. :)

You're too old for trolling, but I give you props for using the internet for more than seeing if you can still get a stiffy :p

idk about anything previous, but he's been level-headed at the least in here today, imho. i mean, in a debate everyone has a motive and position. And if someone wants to play devil's advocate, i don't consider it trolling as much as stimulating conversation. That's the role of a peacemaker. Keep everyone talking.

..... or have multiple accounts.
..... or have the discretionary time to spend.
Giving negative rep is pointless when you have no rep to give.

Say for example someone with 2000 points of rep will give someone negative rep, their rep power, say its 20 points will effect them negative 20 points. While someone with only 100 rep points and a rep power of 1 or 2 will only give them negative 1 or 2 points. In essence, the higher rep you have, the more a negative rep will effect a member. Someone with 2 or 20 accounts will have no effect on rep, be it positive or negative, until they build enough rep to mean anything.

I still think the dislike button will go a long way and a good first step.

that's because we have lives!

try getting trolled off one forum and having said troll follow you onto another (although i suppose having the same username in both places doesn't make it all that difficult lol).... that just showed me just how much discretionary energy some people have for that sort of bs. and a hankering for negative attention i suppose. (thank you "ignore"!)

me, i don't have that sort of time OR energy. nor do i have the time and energy to deal with ad hominem rep attacks.
no neg reps from joeshmowgrow (<- euphemism, not an actual username) is THE reason i've decided to join the riu community. please don't make me leave.

i like the dislike button very much. i just think that ANY system where joepublic can spread negativity without signing our names to it is open to abuse, if not an abuse in itself.
i'm sure we've all encountered folks who never seem to say anything nice but have hella rep points.

"mellokitty, Serapis and bajafox dislike this"
now ^this^ i can 140% support. (and my support is way better than my math ;))

If I am being completely honest, I didn't even remember that it was you, I didn't pay attention to the username or anything. My point was that once I proved that I'm not just some "dummy" trying to get a rise out of anyone, I'm still active in what I do. Yeah, I said what I am involved in, not like I am a higher up or anything, or even like I'm so leader at all, just doing my subtle part.

You can continue to think that I got trolled or that I was trying to troll you, but I just see it as me being high, fogetting who it even was that posted it, and trying to prove that just insulting you back wouldn't have made things any better, right?

An example is in no way me trying to get a rise out of people or an attack, but you can choose to interpret it how you want.

Call me a hypocritical troll or what have you. I'll always defend myself and let you know my two cents when it comes to something I am for.

I think you are right, if anything the dislike button would be a good first step to filtering out useless posts.

Negative rep could be a good thing or bad thing, I've been part of a forum since 2004 and they use negative rep, it is seldom abused, but this forum is a completely different topic and a completely group of people from that forum so you could be right.

edit: in the comments section of news articles, you often see "comment hidden due to low rating".... is that hard to do on vB?
