Quick Newbie Question - Growing at College

Hey everyone--

Want to start growing something at my house with a couple of my housemates. I'm under the impression that to maximize yield and get the best product I need a pretty expensive light set up, perfect for growing/plants.

I am hoping there is a way to grow without spending too much on a crazy light set up, and that there is something cheap but effective to use.

I'm not trying to sell or produce anything super bomb (although that would be nice) , just a little plant that does the job..

The only idea I could come up with besides for using direct sunlight on it was to get some sort of bowl-type silver light, the ones people use for lizards and such, but change out the bulb for something more fitting for growing? ?

At the least, I was hoping that I could be pointed in the right direction for a cheap light that would do the trick ( and I plan on doing all the research and making sure I take care of it properly).

Any help is appreciated-- Thanks in advance!!

theres tons of info all over this site about lights and what kinds to use.

if your looking for cheap GOOD lighting go to htgsupply.com and get a 250W mh/hps conversion. mh for veg stage and hps for flowering.

if you want to go real cheap go to home depot and get blue spectrum CFL's for vegging... get at least 4. and red spectrum cfls for flowering... at least 4. get a small fan.. keep the room around 75 degrees farenheit. get some good soil (i prefer fox farms ocean forest) i paid 25 bucks for a huge bag of it at the hydro store.

should be good to grow something small and personal.
