Roseman's DIY Bubbleponics Tutorial

I am often asked about removing Fan Leaves to allow more light to penetrate.

DO NOT CUT THEM.
IF you think they are blocking some lights, then get some paperclips and hold them back, if you insist on doing anything, but DO NOT CUT THE FAN LEAVES OFF.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, When a large FAN leaf starts yellowing, say it is half yellow, that means in the photosynthesis process, that leaf has ate nutrients, absorbed some LIGHT and made food for the plant and buds and NOW, half of that is gone, or used or consumed. Well, what about the other half? Can not it's energy still be used or consumed?
AND when it is ALL consumed or used, that leaf will naturally just fall off.

AND you say it is blocking LIGHT?
GREAT and GOOD, that means it is getting the LIGHT it needs and deserves more than the other leaves do, to do it's job, to make food and grow.

Years ago I tried removing lower fan leaves to allow more Light to penetrate in. When I did cut them off, the plant went into shock for a day or two, and quit eating or only ate half as much, and just went on "stand by" mode. Then, after a day or two, suddenly I saw that big fan leaf replaced by a new leaf, and I saw my plant use the energy to replace that leaf and grow it back FAST to the size it was, more than it used it to grow the plant bigger and make more buds or bigger buds.

I now believe that removing fan leaves is pointless, and that a leaf has a purpose and will serve that purpose until it is dead. Then it will naturally fall off. You will have small and large lower leaves just naturally wilt and fall off daily.

Don't ever remove fan leaves before harvest for several reasons.

1. The fan leaves MAKE AND STORE energy for the plant. The fan leaves are doing a process called photosynthsis, and it is the most important part or task or job the plant does, to make it grow. They make the FOOD, the sugars and carbs needed to grow.

If you remove a FAN leaf, the plant will stop growing taller until it can replace that removed fan leaf.

Removing a healthy fan leaf is a big waste of time..they are rapided replaced, unless you are in the last 2 or 3 weeks of flowering.

2. Even if the fan leaves are yellowing in late bloom I do not remove them until they are almost ready to fall off. The yellowing in the fan leaves at late harvest is the plants metabolism at work. She is transferring all stored energy in the fan leaf to bud production. It is the easiest source of energy she has late in life. Let that leaf do its job.

The Wrong reasoning is like "I could run faster if I was lighter and weighted less, so I am going to cut my legs off".

From the Growers Bible by Jorge Cervantes:
Leave leaves alone! Removal of healthy leave hacks up a healthy plant. Removing large or shade leaves DOES NOT make plants more productive. This practice DOES NOT supply more light to smaller leaves and growing tips. Plants need all their leaves to produce the maximum amount of chlorophyll and food. Removing leaves slows chlorophyll production, stresses the plant, and stunts its growth. Stress is a growth inhibitor. Remove only dead leaves or leaves that are more than 50 percent damaged.

Awesome Roseman! I was just about to ask this question lol. Funny thing is I own the Grower's Bible but I haven't read it in a while. Thanks for the refresher!

I see people lollipop their plants all the time and then they wonder why they get less then an o per plant. To me that's like cutting off your feet and wondering why you can't walk! LOL!

LOLLIPOPPING. The cutting off of the lower third of a plant's growth so that the plant's energy goes to the upper 2/3s of the plant to make larger buds. I call it BULLSHIT!

Two years ago, I loaned two tanks to my X-wife who is also a friend. She remarried an idiot. LOL. She had followed two of my grows and learned well how to do it. I had two personal grow journals to loan her too. The entire grow, she argued with her husband on how to do it. He is a jerk, of course. (tickles me)
After they were into 4 weeks of BLOOMING, she came home from work to learn he had lollipopped all of the plants. He cut off every leaf in the lower third of every plant. He swore it was what was best for tomato plants. Later, he removed ALL of the fan leaves sayingit sent energy to the buds. They waited and extra 4 weeks for it to happen, but it never did. Look at the attached pics of two of the plants in one tank, and notice the dates.

Those plants never grew any taller or larger and the buds never grew any bigger over the next 9 weeks until harvested. Matter a fact, they just barely stayed alive. They got as little as a quarter ounce per plant and no more than one and a half ounces per plant. They were pitiful looking too.

If you have to listen to those that recommend Lollipopping, please only do it to one plant, so that you learn the hard way. It is one of the most ridiculous procedures any grower can suggest in my book, next to adding urine to the reservoir tank.

I hate to go against the acknowledged guru but don't totally knock the urine business. A cat got into one pf my planters and did her business. The growth was nothing short of incredible. I am pretty sure the high urea content and hhgh bio-avialability due to the pH of cat urine made it very available to the plants. I now use a very high urea base nitrogen in veg state to boost growth rate.

Roseman, if you wanted seed you would keep the males correct? And I see your point on the amount of plants in the 5 gallon bucket. I have 1 plant in a 2 gallon bucket and allready I can see that it is maybe too small. I will upgrade from the 2 gallon to a 5 gallon bucket for the 1 plant.

YES, Males are good for one thing only, making seeds.

and a 2 gallon bucket is not big enough.

Everyday I hear from a new grower that is doing his very first DWC Grow and now he has realized his male and female roots are very tangled in his reservoir tank. He has arrived at the time to remove the male plant, and he asks me how is he going to untangle those male and female roots?
When I tell him how, I later always see him seeking the advice of other growers, doubting me and looking for a much different answer from someone else. Just like I did on my first grow.
You might want to save this post, bookmark it, save it in your Favorites, so you can later share it and the pics with other new growers.
When I did my first grow, I must of spent hours trying to untangle those roots so I could get that male plant out of that tank and not injure the female roots.

Haven't you ever went to a plant nursery, or Lowes or Home Depot's Garden Department and bought a one quart container with 3 or 4 floweres in it? Didn't you take it home and find all 4 plants root-bound, completely filling up the container? Didn't you then tear those 4 plants apart, rip the roots apart into 4 groups, plant them, set them out in the yard or garden spot and see them just thrive the very next day? Did tearing those roots up kill it or put it in shock over one day? Nope.

I've been doing this 5 gallon bucket grow to show new growers it can be done and how to do it and get decent sized plants. I started 3 unfeminized seed in the bucket, knowing I would later get one or two males and one or two females. Lucky me, I got two females this time!
Here you see the bucket after I cut off the top of the male plant, leaving me two 38 to 40 inch tall females. One female has alot of upward branches and will yield many ounces of buds.

Look at this tangled root ball of the three plants, it is larger than a football, but the pic doesn't show it well.

It took me 15 seconds to cut those roots apart, I did not waste any time trying to separate them. I just cut them apart with some shears.
Here you see them AFTER the whacking.

This is what I removed, all in one clump, about 75% of the total roots.

I sure am glad to have that extra hole in the lid now, to go in and out of.
I will put this empty grow cup back in the hole to cover the hole.

When I discover a male, I cut the top of the plant off and I wait to see if I have any more males in the same tank, before I cut the roots. I always take the opportunity to clean the air stones with a brush and metal scrubber and I clean the tank when I remove the males.
