I usually just buy bags of 50 root riot cubes at a time because I don't need very many and they last a long time in the bag, but I've always thought they're terribly overpriced for being peat sponge. Anyway, I decided to try a cheaper brand of the same type of peat based root cube. A bag of 100 Viagrow cubes are about the same price as a bag of 50 Root Riot cubes. Here is a comparison:

The Root Riot cube on the left is slightly bigger and prettier, but they are otherwise very similar. I'll try cloning something in one next time just to make sure they're equivalent. If you are in the market for Root Riot type cubes, the Viagrow are a good economical option. I find these things to be really handy, but of course you don't need them and can easily do everything directly in media.

Here is a quick bud shot that I just took:

20221001_124504.jpg

These are two buds I pulled out to use today. On the left is the Blue D #5 that I grew back at the beginning of this grow journal. I haven't had any of this in months-I had heat sealed this particular batch of it in a 1/4 lb size Grove bag and just stashed it away in the dark until opening it today. This is really standout bud for both the OG and Blueberry terps, such a weird combination but it works. The OG in this is Josh D OG from Karma, and I've said before it's highly underrated as a seed line of OG because of the quality of the terps-it just tastes really good and has the perfect amount of pine in it-it almost tastes like a blueberry mint combo. The bud on the right is the Chem D/Apples and Bananas that I just grew out last cycle-this is Chem D dominant, so it's very strong and super sticky. I can't remember the last time weed made me have to clean my grinder on a daily basis for it to work.

I mainly just wanted to mention how well these grove bags have preserved terps over 6 months in storage and also, I've got to hand it to Old School Genetics. I'm back to smoking two OSG strains over the fresh bud I grew last cycle-the Blue D #5 and the Old Red Sour.

I wanted to share this pic with you guys, it's from Madmac over at ICmag. The purple plant is a Tom Hill Haze pheno and the green ones are Oldtimer's haze I think. Just a cool picture to compare the two main lines of Original haze left, with the THH selected more towards the Thai side and the OT1 Haze more towards the Colombian. How cool is that magenta pheno of THH? I'm hoping to grow out some THH and look for this and other rare phenos next year.

If you guys want to see more pics there is a good thread on ICmag https://www.icmag.com/threads/tom-hill-haze.339865/. Madmac did a beautiful preservation using 3 packs of seeds, and now they are the only THH available for purchase that I know of. You can find this preservation at Seedbay and Proseeds. I can vouch for Seedbay from previous orders, and I have an order out with Proseeds now, so I'll let you guys know once I get those seeds. Proseeds has a bunch of cool crosses Mac made with select THH cuts. There is a well known 5% "acid" pheno that everyone wants after they read that thread! "Acid" meaning like LSD, not "I'm meltinggggg!!"

Here is another pheno from that line, also taken from the ICmag thread.

THH (and Madmac's preservation in particular) is known to contain the 4 legendary major haze phenos, and you can see there are quite a few variations-root beer, magenta, purple, silver, lime, etc, all with their own special sativa high ranging from moderate THC happy weed to electric rocket ship. You can find plenty phenos that bleed red sap too! If you guys haven't tried a true 100% NLD sativa, you might be surprised at how psychoactive it is...as soon as you hybridize it, that particular trait disappears.

Honestly if I get that pure magenta pheno, I'll cross it with other strains just for looks! Like, imagine that pheno crossed with a perfect example of Heath Robinson's Black Rose? Or the Trop Cookies cut? Cannabis is one of my favorite flowers just for looks too.

Just a quick update on my Strawberry Cough reversal....so far, I have not gotten any pollen, my poor "girl" is shooting blanks! I've kept her going, but I've discovered that you can't keep plants inside a plastic container with no air flow for longer than a month or so before you start getting bud rot. Since it hasn't produced any pollen (yet) I've been airing her out after removing the obvious rot. I want to keep her going for a bit longer. She started developing bud hairs (along with new nanners) recently, so my thought is, perhaps the newer nanners might contain pollen since they are less under the influence of the STS at this point? I'm thinking of trying this again, but this time I will just give the plant a single treatment of 3 mM stock solution. If I get anymore botrytis, i'll trash this plant and start over giving it better ventilation until I know whether the new plant is producing pollen.

I've been reading up on the various Indian cannabis varieties that are available-we have access to so much right now, with all of the many India based landrace collectors, like the Indian Landrace exchange, Landrace Mafia, and Coco genes, among others. Coco genes is a more recent discovery for me, but they have some incredible stuff! Khalifa Genetics acquired their Kerala Chellakutti from the Cogo-genes collective. You can see some of their strains on Strainly (All of them are on Instagram too, I really should make an account and join modern society) and I'd like to try ordering from them once I build back up some discretionary seed $$$. That Kerala Chellakutti is a very interesting strain, supposedly very psychoactive...but it also is one of the longest bloomers, so not super practical unless I want to take on a major breeding project. I purchased a pack of Sheelavathi seeds from ILE last year on sale, and I just saw that they had rewritten their article on it, and it's quite interesting! https://www.indianlandraceexchange.com/indianlandraceexchange/sheelavathi/

So I'm definitely going to collect more Indian Landrace sativas this year, but I think I'll start first by growing out a few of the Sheelavathi seeds next cycle, alongside the Chocolate Thai F4s from Hazeman. Sheelavathi is supposed to be as trippy as Kerala, but done in 14-16 weeks, vs 20-25 for Kerala. I'll also get some Orissa, either from Coco-genes or Landrace Mafia.

I feel like not much good Sativa breeding is being done nowadays, vs 20+ years ago in the USA. The industry is so focused on bag appeal and THC% that we've lost out on the quality of high and terpenes in general. So many of today's popular crosses either aren't terpy, or they are terpy, but it's the same old common "dispensary terps." It's definitely time to grow some Kerala or Orissa gold, but I'll give the Sheelavathi a try first to see why it has become so popular within India-I'm looking forward to experiencing those unique terpenes too. It's sort of like when you go on vacation and try some weird fruit for the first time-like when I tried durian for the first time, I was thinking "WOW, what the hell is this flavor I'm experiencing, does not compute!" (it tastes like sweet gasoline)
I know its an old thread, but I just bought a 24 pack of the new drop of Kerala Chellakutti from Kalifa Genetics. It will be a while until theyre grown. Id like to make more of them, and Id also like to cross it with a Male Crickets and Cicada PNWHP x Puck/NL1 BC1 F2s I have. Should be an interesting cross.
