An interesting article that provides background to the developing democracy that is Ukraine.

What the mouth of Sauron said:

“You can’t say it enough, Ukraine is not a democracy. … In American terms, you would call Ukraine a tyranny.”
— Fox News host Tucker Carlson, on his show, Feb. 22

Carlson has been channeling many of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s arguments for invading Ukraine, including that Ukraine is not a democracy. Putin has asserted that the 2014 ouster of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych — what Putin labels a coup d’etat — “did not bring Ukraine any closer to democracy and progress.” He stressed the role of oligarchs and attacks on political opponents and media outlets.
On Wednesday’s show, Carlson expanded on these themes, tossing in another Putin nostrum — that Ukraine is a “client state” of the United States.

“Ukraine, to be technical, is not a democracy,” Carlson said. “Democracies don’t arrest political opponents, and they don’t shut down opposition media, both of which Ukraine has done. And by the way, Ukraine is a pure client state of the United States State Department — again, that’s fine. We are not mad about that, go ahead and run Ukraine if you want, if you think you can do a better job than Ukrainians. Just don’t tell us it’s a democracy.”

The Facts

(excerpted, there is much more in the article)

But what’s on paper is not necessarily the same as what happens in practice. Ukraine’s constitution, for instance, guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, but there is no law that specifically provides for freedom of assembly.
The country has struggled to build up a lasting democratic infrastructure as it has veered between leaders who lean toward Russia or toward the West. Corruption remains a serious problem that government officials have only halfheartedly addressed.

Zelensky has been engaged in a bitter political feud with the man he defeated in a landslide 2019 election, Petro Poroshenko. Prosecutors have sought to arrest Poroshenko on charges of treason and supporting terrorism, but a court in January said he could await trial while released on his own recognizance.

Freedom House, a nonpartisan think tank that ranks democracies, has labeled Ukraine “a transitional or hybrid regime” in one recent report and “partly free” in a second report.

Hungary, Carlson’s fave, is also listed as a “transitional or hybrid regime” and does not rank much higher than Ukraine. Ukraine’s overall Freedom House score, moreover, is higher than that of Mexico and Indonesia, two countries often labeled democracies.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, which in its 2021 Democracy Index listed the United States as a “flawed democracy,” also pegged Ukraine as a “hybrid regime.”

Poroshenko, BTW is Putin's puppet and hated by the vast majority of Ukraine for his vicious actions when he was in control.

She was being ironic. I'm sorry but most of us aren't as close to the situation and we are not always going to say the right thing. She cares though sometimes its hard to hear it through the words.
you’re talking about the one that said im snarky or me? On the other hand i’m not trying to offend anyone, just trying to give live updates because this is what this post is about.

I was trying to tell you that the snarky one, schuylaar, (not you) is always like this, except when she's personally affected. She's not uncaring, she's speaking from ignorance.

I know you aren't trying to offend anyone and I'm very glad for your posts. I treasure this kind of communications from people who I would otherwise never hear from.

I tried to find more information about the statement you relayed to us about NATO saying they will defend Molodova? I don't use twitter, which seems to be the place to get that kind of quick news flashes. Could you tell me who said that? It will help me find out more about what he said.

Thank you for being so patient with us.

There is a lot of support for Ukraine in the west, especially as the humanitarian crises unfolds and the refugees arrive. This will translate into political support across the spectrum (notable exceptions) for a hard line on Russia. NATO support for Moldovia will be difficult since there is a Russian base there and it is not really a neutral country because of this. On the other hand mountainous terrain is troublesome to take and easy to defend, the Carpathians are probably your best defense. That's not to say NATO could not help in the future, but the Russians have to go and the government should kick them out after this shit.

Dear Vlad Putin, maximum leader for life of the woefully governed people of Russia.

Thank you for giving the air forces of many nations that comprise NATO air defense the opportunity to practice how to disable or kill your forces. We can do so while your forces are bogged down in street fighting and morale declines as Russian troops realize they are the ones who are committing atrocities while you take the credit.

Six U.S. F-35A Lightning II fighter jets deployed from Germany to multiple countries on NATO’s eastern flank on Thursday for air policing flights in solidarity with the transatlantic alliance. They’ll disperse alongside F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-15 Eagle fighter jets across Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Romania, U.S. Air Forces in Europe said.

The presence of the Air Force’s most advanced fighter jet signals a swift response if Russia expands its offensive outside Ukraine’s borders and into NATO countries. The F-35A can act as a quarterback to pass targeting information and other data between other U.S. and NATO fighters in the region, should the alliance need to react quickly to Russian aggression.

The six F-35As come after the Defense Department promised on Tuesday to send up to eight Lightning IIs that had arrived at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany from Hill Air Force Base, Utah.

“Why are they in the Baltics? It’s assurance, deterrence and, quite frankly, I think they’ll do training as well, depending on how the situation evolves,” a senior F-35 official said Wednesday. Air Force Times is withholding their name because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

That training involves working out the kinks in sharing targeting data and other sensor information between the F-35A and European jets, they said. The official expects multiple types of fighters running tactics drills together to ensure everyone is up to speed.

“Europe’s going to have 500 F-35s. Only 50 of those are going to be U.S. airplanes at [RAF Lakenheath, England], give or take,” they said. “It has to be seamless with our partners.”

Fake news

Its a FACT Trump said that what Putin is doing in Ukraine is Genius.

He said it on a radio program and Tuesday, and many reTHUGliKLANS are distancing themselves for the remark.

You may be in denial of tRumps remark, but it only shows you havent researched the information. Its easily found with a short google.
You can find the radio broadcast. I suggest you look for it.

The Orange Baffon has really put his foot in his mouth this time, along with his white supremacist buddies Cucker Tarlson and Laura Ingraham.

Even Lindsey Grahm doesnt agree with tRump.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he had breakfast Thursday with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in between a conversation with a top State Department official and calls with Democratic senators to discuss a supplemental appropriations bill that would aid the Ukrainian people. Graham said he wasn’t a fan of Trump’s “genius” comment about Putin.

And tRump saying Putin wouldnt have invaded if he was president is laughable. tRump loves to praise Putin, and suck his dick, especially in public. tRump has defended Putin for the whole 4 years he was in office.

tRump wanted us out of NATO, and withheld 400 MILLION $$$$ of military aid for Ukraine because Zelensky would go along with his Hunter Biden Blackmail Scheme.

Obama wouldnt give Ukraine aid because the former president was a puppet of Putin, and corrupt.

Even Putins puppet Poroschenko has taken up arms in Ukraine AGAINST PUTIN, and says Ukraine will never surrender,, no matter how many missles, tanks, and soldiers Putin sends to Ukraine. And by taking up arms, I mean Literally. IMHO though he has ulterior motives, like trying to become president again. But he is denouncing Putin.

tRump did say Putin was Genius for Putins invasion of Ukraine. A country with a president who won 73% of the vote, and hated the former Russian Puppet.

I hate Russia..

Also Guess Who is the Star of the Day on Russian T.V. For calling Putin's invasion of Ukraine "Genius."

I hate that guy too!

Isn't enough to have attempted a Coup, Stolen Top Secret documents while pointing a finger at Clinton for erasing a hard drive down to all zero bits so no one could get any classified information from that drive.

Why doesn't the POTUS SCROTUM go live in Russia and then we all would be happy?
It's more than a gaff when an ex-POTUS praises a Leader that would Nuke the USA if he could get away with it.

Seriously Trumpies.. You want Mar-A-Tardo to be President again in 2025? Seriously?

This will shake a few of Trump's nuts from the tree.

I don't hate Russia, the people of Russia aren't represented by their government. Some are shits but most are dealing with life under a vicious police state. I hate all authoritarian dictatorship governments or more specifically the people running them. Putin is especially vile. The next layer down, the government ministers and oligarch billionaire crime bosses are every bit as vile.

But I take note that thousands filled the streets of Russian cities in protest and at least 1200 people were willing to expose themselves to police brutality after they were arrested. Those Russians are heroes.

We have confirmation from a second source!

Lt. Col. Tyson Wetzel, an Air Force intelligence officer and military strategist currently serving as an Atlantic Council fellow, said in an online briefing late Wednesday the force the United States and NATO has amassed in Eastern Europe is enough to give Russian President Vladimir Putin pause before expanding a military campaign beyond Ukraine.

Ok, so, it's small comfort but this indicates people in control of US armed forces are thinking beyond US or NATO borders.

You are in a country that is a NATO member, an attack from Russia on your soil is at this point extremely unlikely.

From a CNN article about the same: ”NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Friday that NATO will “do what it takes” to defend all its allies, including Ukraine, and “every inch of NATO territory,” confirming that the NATO Response Force (NRF) had been activated for the first time in response to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. “

NATO Response force is not for anyone who will need it, they are send to NATO members only, which does not include Moldovia. So yeah that certainly is a “new” statement and we’ll have to see where it goes.

My ex is from Moscow, I've actually been there.. It is very much a mafia run country of the wealthiest getting and staying wealthy by uniting the political forces to protect them. I hear a whole different side of it from her. Putin is fairly popular because of some of the things he does for the people and the people generally believe replacing him will bring about more hardships than good..

I think a change though, to stop this war, may be in order. If enough Russians unite against him, in the act of overthrowing his power structure, it may be the only way to end the war.
