SIP Grow

Mistakes and improvements on this grow are:

When I ph downed the North Thunderfuck reservoir I didn’t let it drift up, ended up with deficient leaves that show signs of ph fluctuations.

Not enough K in soil mix but that was easily corrected with fertilizer, thinking less calcium and Mg, cut those back by about 25%.

Fertilizer needs to happen every 3-4 days after the first 30 days, any longer and it starts to show up on lower leaves. To make this easier I think I’ll go with fertilizer spikes, put one or two in the bottom that way they still get disbursed since my goal is to have no top watering/fertilizing done. Fertilizing from the top every three days makes it less SIP like.

I need a better support system for supporting the colas from the five gallon pails, maybe just bamboo taped onto four locations around the pot. Scoping rods would be cool, I can dream right?

Day 85, these plants are taking their sweet time. Had the Dolato fall over and a few branches from the Cannafuel go with it. Staked it up as best I could, a lot of leaves are no longer catching rays on the Dolato since the fall. This feels like the Seinfeld episode where they try to run the car on empty as long as they can.

To start I used 25 litre totes for the reservoir, yoghurt containers for wick, 5 gallon pails for soil, garbage bag to cover SIP. Cost $12 per SIP. In the past my reservoirs were too small so these will triple the capacity of an old style.

Nice work, when you dump the soil out give the bottom a smell.
With the 5g pails being taller than wide wondering if it makes a difference.
Ive had a few that went bad, smallish plants that Ive kept the res full.

Thanks. I emptied a pail, the roots were from the bottom to the top. It looks like theres a band of concentrated roots about at mid point.

It didn’t smell, roots made it 1/2 way down wick then stopped.

So, this is really similar to the rubble 5 gallon bucket system I'm gonna throw together with the exception of I'm adding a 3" down spout to add water and a overflow tube 3/4" installed at the top of my water overflow point. So, the question asking you to smell it and look for stink is that to check for anaerobic or aerobic conditions ?

Yup, mine was similar with only a few roots coming out the wick. The bottom portion always sitting in water made for a bad smell.
Now could have been from sitting after I chopped as I didn't dump it out for 5-6 days.

If the soil is too heavy/without enough aeration it probably would get anaerobic. I did a drainage test when making my soil recipe. If it puddles on top and stays like that for maybe 5-10 seconds approximately it’s not aerated enough, but also on the flip side you don’t want too much otherwise it won’t wick up in the pot.

I used to use LAB in reservoir, that’s the only time the reservoir got funky on me. Funny because LaB was supposed to keep it from getting funky. Never noticed it in the soil but also the soil I use is aerated enough imo. Well water and ph down in reservoir didn’t ever go funky either.
