You only itemize if your interest exceeds the standard deductions............no matter how much you don't want it to be so.....
Standard deduction is 6200, if you paid 10k in mortgage interest you would deduct that, but not the standard deduction.

End result? 3800 more deduction for 10k in interest.

Its worse if you're married......same 200k mortgage 10k interest...........standard deduction is 12400 which exceeds mortgage interest.

The reason it took so long to reply to you and when he did it was just a snappy one liner is because he made a mistake and can't admit it.
