It takes a country a couple of years to really gear up for war, if they have the resources and/or allied support and the backing of the population. It will only get worse for Russia from here on out, sure they are dangerous and might win some battles, but they have already lost the war and a lot more. IMO taking out the rail bridges inside Russia leading to Ukraine, along with some road bridges will end the war in Ukraine pretty quick by cutting off the Russians in Ukraine and containing them inside their own country. Perhaps that's what those German cruise missiles are for to cut those rail links and end the war ASAP with a catastrophic Russian loss that will topple Vlad.

in this instance I can think of a less sad story … perhaps existing ordnance is not well-adapted to the drone-based game of tank hatch bingo. I can’t think of anything like these bombettes except smaller mortar rounds, which probably are safetied such that they arm by being fired. (So arming them otherwise is perhaps risky.)

I don’t know.
Me neither, sounds plausible though.

It’s very ‘cool’ what Ukraine does and achieves with the means they have. But the evolutionary pressure behind their inventive use seems indisputable to me.

Goodbye Russian rail bridges 100 or 200km inside Russia leading into Ukraine, looks like Germany wants the war to end and Russia to lose. The Russians are extremely dependent on rail transport for fuel and logistics and don't have the road transport of operate much more than 50km from their railheads in any force. The Ukrainians could stop them inside Russia and cut off their supplies, but the Germans might put restrictions on the use of the weapons inside Russia. Rail lines are quick to fix, rail bridges over rivers and streams are another matter and these look like they were made for the job. Cutting the half dozen rail lines inside Russia by destroying the rail bridges leading into Ukraine could end this war pretty fast IMO by cutting the Russians off from resupply and reinforcement. Take out the road bridges too and they will be in even more trouble, it will end the war quickly and in the most humane way.

No consensus in german politics about it yet. It’s the leading party‘s defense minister who ruled it out last thursday as not a top priority right now. Former commander-in-chief of US land forces in Europe Ben Hodges just appealed to Germany to send them, if the US sends similar.

What is clear however is one thing: the whole reason some want to send them is that they believe the war will, at best, drag on for years to come if they don’t. Germany is willing to increase support but the taurus remains a tough decision because it goes against the will of 2/3rd of the germans. Only a ~25% of the German population supports handing over a few to Ukraine, much lower than the more than 2/3rd who does want Germany to continue its support for Ukraine.

Two common opposing arguments have already been addressed. Germany would supposedly not have enough, only 150, to share 3, but then it turned out they have 300 ready to use out of 600 total. The second argument is the fear they’d be used to attack targets inside Russia and getting dragged into direct war but german experts said Germany can simply program them to block russian territory.

Things like these sometimes just take time solely cause people need to warm up to the idea first, but at the same time there’s a push because they feel bad about the delay in approving the delivery of the leopards. Not sure Yehor Chernev putting them on the spot is wise though.

Whoever wants the war to end ASAP will send the means to end it and one way to end it with a Ukrainian victory is to take out the rail bridges inside Russia leading into Ukraine, there are not many. I suspect Biden wants to extend the Russian pain and destroy as much of their military power and economy as possible before peace breaks out. I also think that smart Ukrainians agree that this is the way to long term security and the government can blame it on the allies when it is all said and done. Russia has almost gone through its huge cold war stockpile of arms and is near the end of it, he might raise another 250,000 untrained men, but what will they fight with, spears? China is helping them with uniforms, boots, body armor and helmets, but I don't think guns or other weapons systems yet, if they do, forget trade with the allies and there 50 of them, 20X more trade than with Russia who has no money anyway.

Some pretty good footage.

It looks like a fucking tactical nuke went off, a righteous target, it appears like they were filling the shells with explosives at the location so there was lots of HE is laying around. A small, long-range drone at the right place and time carrying 10 or 20 kg of explosives perhaps.

Commercial drones all operate in the 2.4gHz band and FPV drones operate in this band and a few other RC bands, all easily jammed. However, all good control radios have a JR module bay where a different module can be snapped in to operate at different frequencies with a different antenna. Receivers are a thumbnail sized circuit board with a couple of chips and surface mounted components. The Ukrainians could build military grade receivers easily that wouldn't be much larger and have "kits" to replace the commercial receivers and transmitters used to a much more robust platform that can auto frequency shift and use other tricks to counter jamming. They are at war and can use the entire radio spectrum if they need to.

Such receiver kits would only cost a few dollars to make and operate with a wide variety of systems using standard communications protocols and would offer encrypted communications with greater range too. Have large numbers of them ready to apply to commercial drones so they can be used in a war zone and survive, pull out the OEM receiver, or disable it on a commercial drone and pop in your own custom receiver.

Yep, it does look like they have overcome the Russian jamming. I imagine things like image and scene comparison would be easy to implement these days, probably with a raspberry pi and that could take the drone to the final stages of the target. The same system cruise missiles used could be made cheaply today using google earth data and a mapping camera.
