What the hell are these things?

Are you sure he didn't mess up his stem and try to mend it and is fucking with you?

Never seen that before...

But under the "scales", you can clearly see the stem has been messed up.
 
He says the texture is like vinyl and they overlap evenly. The stem was not harmed but had been cut off the main plant for trimming. It is the only place on the plant that has this. All are at a loss!

I can literally see white stem showing. His stem was clearly damaged and w/e that is is on top of it.
 
They are about 3/16" across and he says that it almost seems like someone came in and glued them to the plant! It's crackin me up because he is so freaked out about it... Since it is isolated to one branch, he's not too worried, but it's going to go down as an alien haunt for the time being.
 
Few observations...

-That is almost 1/4"... that's pretty big.
-They "climb" opposite directions.
-The set that "climbs" off the stem, is "climbing" the wrong way. If it was something building on top of itself, the upper "scales" that are in the air would not have attached underneath of the others, just doesn't make sense from a "climbing" aspect.
-The stem is damaged underneath the "scales" and he is telling you it isn't.

Again, and I'm not accusing anyone. Are you sure he isn't fucking with you?
