What the hell is going on?

GOOGLE is NOT a marijuana cultivation website. this is my concern john. i don't care what google does.
i do understand how the internet works :eyesmoke:
and i do take offense at the "stoner paranoia" remark, John. i'm not a sketchy kid worried about a couple of joints. i don't wanna be wearing an orange jumpsuit brother.
I fail to understand how an advertising company knowing you browse a weed website can provide enough proof for a search warrant... Heck it doesn't even prove you have an account here lol

Now, remember RIU has your IP address as well. Imagine the servers get seized by the cops... Paranoid now? lol

geez take a guess

think i already stated the reasons
I am trying to find out what your exact fears are, then perhaps i can lay your mind to rest

1, Every website you visit has your IP address .. use a proxy or vps/vpn if this worries you ... you could also use a mobile dongle 3G 4G
2, Every website you visit that runs ads from a central ad server has your IP address and plenty of "cookies" on your computer most likely , all major sites do this, ad's are big revenue
3, The security of your own Network .. your own computer is your responsibility .. educate yourself
4, Your inappropriate concerns are the direct result of your lack of knowledge
5, Pop up ad's ip address, this is very very basic stuff guys .. sometimes i wonder how some of you even turn on your computers ..
6, You only have yourself to blame if you do not take adequate security precautions while enjoying the pleasures of the interwebz

what a bunch of bullshit
ok how is it getting our towns before we even clicked link or even posted in thread u mean it is searching member list for general local
mine is a small tiny town so how is that targeting general locations

i know how computers and internet works so dont try to brush me off with that simple bs
I know that my DSL feeds into a local server center. I imagine most advertisers just dump into these centers and neither know nor care about the individual IP addresses. I could be wrong. cn

Lets say the advertisement company on here is being run by the cops. The adverts track IP adresses and also which pages they logged the ip address from. Now they could use a crawler to scan pages on this site and find out what you posted, that with the ip address the adverts tracked they can pin point who you are and where you live. With that info they could easily get a warrant.............

Still, they can't prove you own an account on RIU, let alone which.

Also, you cannot track an IP address to an exact location. They are usually seen as being located at a facility owned by your ISP... In order to locate you, cops need to get a court order and have your ISP hand out the information about which customer was using that IP at that time. This requires better evidence than data from an advertising company saying you just read a thread about hydro on RIU.

But nobody has been busted by the police tracking down people's IP addresses on RIU.. They've had our IP addresses all along, why begin to worry now?

ok, try this. Go to google maps. search an address and allow google to auto detect your address...... tell me they cant do it

I don't believe you or sunnyboy are stupid.. I like both of you guys.

I'm just saying that you don't have to worry. Nobody has been busted and nobody will be busted.

I do hate the advertisments though. I steered clear away from other MJ sites that were filled with ads (like the current RIU), they just don't feel "comfortable". Makes me feel like the site doesn't really care an they're only trying to scam you.

I think the problem here is the OP guy got a bit scared because the ad showed him his ip address
but obviously, the ad server would have his ip address in order to send him the ad in the first place LOL
it is the fact it has been "shown" to him, that has caused the fears,
he is concerned about the regular functioning of the internet nothing sinister
people are taught that if somone has your ip address this is a breach of security, while this can be true in some situations , that is not valid here

i have not seen any ad's on this site, .. but then again i am not a typical user, i do take some interest in security, but i am no expert lol
i do not allow javascript , cookies , vbscript , activex iframes unless it is needed for some logins etc
and i do have adblock , im using comodo dragon, which is based on chrome with a few security tweaks
i do not use a proxy or vps or anything to mask my ip address , imo it is unnecessary to hide it here although it is a simple step to do so
if it gives piece of mind to others to uses proxies i am all for that
there is nothing riu can do to protect any of it's users, from direct compromise, this is not there job anyway

RIU should fully disclose yes, im sure it does try to keep it up to date, all sites do this ad's crap ... ad's and spam are pretty much useless, and plague the internet , but they also provide revenue for those giving "free sites" like RIU
any sub-domain or ad server or new domain that folk connect to subsequently after connection to this site SHOULD be disclosed, you are perfectly right about that ..
but since it is not a requirement to use this site .. it is not like ad-ware in a piece of software, where you need to accept the ad's to run the free software
you are free to block all connections yourself to any other domains on any website you visit, but this would be so tedious and would disrupt your browsing experience since you would be blocking things constantly on virtually every site , ad block and other programs like that work quite well to automatically get most of the known ad's and ad servers but will not block them all, since they are mostly dependent on "black lists" and "white lists" anything new will slip past them

This site gets a fair amount of traffic, which amounts to a fair amount of revenue from ad's it is kind of sad that all sites have to get involved with this kind of shite, but that is just the way it is, they are all doing it.. it's not sinister, although it is not in anyway helpful either, it is just spam/ junk mail type of thing .. an annoyance not a security risk imo

peace :)

Check the URL I edited in after you posted. I couldn't post the pic on my iPad, but that page will show you what I mean! It shows ip and the town you live in. Just like google does. Just like some ads here do....ads that make this website possible
