I am Debating to switch over from CFL's to an HPS setup. I figure i can still use my CFL's to Veg with then use my HPS through my Flowering stage. So the question is for a 5x5 room what kind of HPS setup is optimum. Ventilation is difficult which may cause problems.

5x5x?

height plays a factor with the hps cause of the heat -- especially if ventilation is a problem. by problem, do you mean there cant be ventilation, or you would have to do some work to get ventilation?

a single 400 watt will get the temperature up pretty high...if you had an ac to off-set the temps, that could help...

personally i'd want like 800w in a 5x5 area, but that makes alot of heat. so without venting that makes a real problem, the 150w don't make much heat, but you'd need a few and they have less penetrative power that the high watt lights

1000 watt covers a 6 by 6 area im sure it will do some real damage in a 5 by 5. i would def. go with the 1k hps light. have a cooltube or real good vent.

i have a 1k hps over a 5x5 area and it is the shit but yea the light was 500 and my fan and filter was 280 but wow 1K makes shit big and denis ass heel cat.

So would 4x4 be a good space for a 400w hps?
Space isn't a problem for me, but 400w hps is all I have to work with for now.

SWITCHING TO HPS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING YOU COULD DO
you will not be sorry. i built a 6 by 6 room in my cellar and i threw a 600 hps (sun supply 10)
i also added 3 4 ft floros and a 100 watt hps for side light. and ill say the 600 is great. im actual;ly thinking of putting my 400 and my other 100 hps in there also...

on a second thought i have a 400 hps sun suply 2 and a 600 watt hps sun supply 10. neither one gives off heat. i mean jack shit for heat. i thought i was gonna need fans gallore and maybe run the ac through the room. but i actually had to pump hot air into the 6 by 6 because the light wasnt putting out the heat i thought it would...also i looked into it and it costs me 7 dollars and change to run the 600hps for 12 hours a day, 14 for 24 hours. thats a month. and it only costs me 4.78 to run the 400. these sun supplyu ballasts are very electrically efficient. you cant go wrong with these. the best thing i ever did was to buy those lights. i was using 6 four foot floro tubes that were t8s, when i switched to the hps, man o man o it was fuckin amazing. the plants triple growth in the first 5 weeks...

600 MH for veg, 600 HPS for flower minimum 600 HPS Make sure to have good ventilation casue temp will go up around 25-25 degrees.

go with the 1k its almost the same price hasa 600 more bang fo your buck. just use a cooltube with goo vent. and you will get massive yields

i have a 600 hps in a 6 by 6 i also have a 100 hps and three 4 ft floros in that 6 by 6 and mine gives off nothing as far as heat goes. i mean jack shit...i had to put a heater in there juyst to keep the temp at 65-70f so if you get the right ballast and light heat will not be an issue. unles your throwing 600 in a 3 by 3

Well with you guys here and from the Q&A outside of RIP ive been told that a 600 with a American made ballast will be what fits my 5x5 room perfect. What i will be doing within the next 3 to 4 weeks is build my grow room into a split level lower level i will keep my Cfl's for Veg and the Top level will be my HPS undecided with size just yet. The problem i run into is building this all up and then finding that the Hps runs to hot and i need to go thru my roof and cut for a Stack. So do i throw the stack up anyways to run a cool tube thru my HPS? My Cfl's at this point produce enuff heat to keep my room perfect temp. With the Addition of a HPS i think it will sky rocket the Temp in the room ?

Just get a digital 600 watt setup with a cool tube. The digital ballast are so cheap now it ridiculaous. Setups for 600 watt digital with cool tubes and bulbs shipped under $200 now adays. A 400 watt light will work but the 600 will kick ass for you.1000 watt would be real nice too but digital 1000 watt setup with kool tube and bulb will be more like $285

I havent heard of a digital ballast yet i will study that. Now a ? i have is about the cool tube. Is the tube hooked into and out duct which sucks the air thru the tube and then up and out of a stack ?

You havent heard of digital ballast where ya been last 5 years lol yeah check them out 30% more output 15% less draw years long life on ballast and bulbs,no heat from ballast built in cooling fans, the weight about 5 lbs versus 20-50. no hard starts on bulbs they run both mh and hps bulbs not switches or conversion bulbs and are cheaper...You can use cool tube in a few ways. I use them in tnets I have a fan on the intake hole on one side then I use flex ducting from the fan to the first cool tube the light is inside. Then flex bvent from the second end to the next cool tube. then flex tube from the other side to 3 rd tube and then last flex hose from the 3 rd kool tube runs to a fan on the exit vent hole. The first fan sucks air into the line of tubes bringing cool outside air in. The fan on the other end is sucking drawing that cool air over the bulbs and back out. You can put your hands on the glass tubes and feel like a warm plate. You can use one tube and have a fan bring air in and the other pushing the old air out the stack

Here these arent real good but kinda shows a dual setup in a tent and then 2 digital 600 watt ballast
